The use of CANbus means there is less wiring in newer cars (yet even more reliance on electronics, of course).

You'd like to think so, but CANbus is really only controller to controller, with some sensors on the bus but most still running voltage or current sensing. The shit part of canbus is if you replace an addressed part, controller or sensor, you need the dealer laptop to set the new address in the relevant controller.

I was wondering that when I was posting this. New cars will have more electronics but I thought they might take better advantage of CANbus and more powerful central control units.
