A huge opportunity was missed by people running major communities to functionally degrade Reddit in at least the medium-term as a website.

There weren't really other places to go (most of the Lemmy instances got created around the API announcement), and changes to subreddits would have been reverted

Grow up. I’ve never had a problem with moderation on Lemmy, but if I did, I’d find another community that accepted ‘the way I communicate’ or whatever.

Network effect creates centralization on one community per topic.

!news@lemmy.world is by far the most active community on the topic with 12.8k monthly active users. The second most active one is !news@lemmings.world with 3.7k monthly active users.
