Do you think a real person who speaks fluent English and knows the difference between a Romance Language and a Germanic one is unaware if they themselves understand spoken French?
You seem to be mixing the concept of being startled and being afraid. Most people can be startled if something moves unexpected across the floor but that is not fear.
Would you refuse to go in the kitchen if a cockroach has been spotted in there? That is fear.
I would not go (or would definitely hesitate to go) into a room where any of wild dogs, snakes, wolves, hyenas, wild hogs, or bears were loose but a few cockroaches wouldn't stop me.
Am I the only one who deeply dislikes the phrase "on the spectrum" and the way NTs misuse it? In my experience, most NTs seem to think it means the person being described as some kind of light or partial autism. When it fact "on the spectrum" means exactly the same this clinically as "has autism."
Is it just me? Am I missing something?
I originally switched to Gentoo when I got my first AMD64 workstation. Gentoo was the only distro with full support and optimization for a little while.

I haven't run Windows in 25 years and I no plans to. I've actually been using linux for my desktop all that time, including gentoo for several years. Personally, I think people should use whatever os they like and the more choices the better!
No because there is no need. Air quotes indicate that you are quoting someone elss. You are speaking someone else's words.
A sentence with a parenthetical clause is still gramatically valid without the marks to offset the clause. The is no need to indicate it visually.
