I love having my decision not to buy a Nintendo Switch and stick to PC games validated.

Feel bad for all the Nintendo fans though, I get how you can fall in love with a franchise they make and want their stuff only to have "except it costs a ton" stuck on, so you'll have to skip for financial reasons and feel unhappy. It's a lot harder to abstain from something you actually care about and want, than something you are maybe mildly interested in.

Luckily at the moment they have a lot more upvotes than downvotes. Probably because they are providing information and aside from the "you are stupid for breaking (a likely-predictable) TOS and expecting nothing to happen" judgment, it's pretty neutral on passing judgment on the bigger argument at hand: whether this policy should be here in the first place.

Watch Lemmy turn one of the few apolitical posts about something American into something political in 3… 2… 1…

Politics is important but sometimes I just want to play a video game without someone turning the conversation to politics when that wasn't the topic at hand at all. I'm super angry about all the things my country is doing now too, but I also sometimes want to enjoy what I have left instead of being constantly stressed about it and bringing up the horrors happening at every opportunity—especially with just a comment about if a truck driving sim that seems to be mostly just about driving will suddenly implement something political and unpleasant (when we know they probably will not, that's not the vibe they are going for) and no links to taking action. (Here are a few, albeit aimed at Americans.

On the other hand, people have to vent sometimes and I guess I need to build up tolerance and a thicker skin to that, even when it shows up in a place marked Games and not US Politics.

Even if it doesn't work, I'd at least want to let people try and get practice doing something about a problem (even if that's just leaving a comment on social media to direct others to sign a petition that will eventually get lawmakers' attention with enough signatures based on that country's laws, because that still has more chance for good than yet another comment about X Thing Bad. Even though I agree with a lot of Lemmy's X Thing Bad takes), makes them more likely to do something in the future. At least they can walk away saying "I tried". Some people might see no guarantee of results for their time and think of it as time wasted, and that is their choice, but I don't really see a reason to say "that'll never work" without any offer of alternative. Most charitably, you are trying to save them time and disappointment, trying to prevent a "it didn't work, activism does not work, I'll never do anything like that again" attitude if it fails, but I think a lot of people are just seeing the comment as pointless negativity.

The way I'd think of this is "it wasn't made for you, simply made available to you in case you like it," and that's a perfectly valid way to approach making stuff. If there's a giant overseas audience, why not make them happy and profit at the same time, but if there is not because they hate it, well different audiences like different things and it is no big failure of yours to have an audience you weren't catering to dislike your work.

It's possible to be dismayed at price raises that don't affect you, because it will affect others. I was never in the market for a console and do not anticipate buying new electronics anytime soon, but I am sure that this will sadden others who find themselves priced out. Besides, I don't know what the future holds. Maybe an existing electronic of mine breaks and I find I need a replacement, so the price hikes will touch me.

I don't care about Overwatch but I am happy for the devs and hope this leads to more unionization in the video game industry.

I heard about this on Reddit, glad to see it has made its way to the Fediverse. I am curious what you are using to develop this, since I've also been interested in making my own personal walking app (not going to be competition, only ever intended to release to myself and maybe a few friends).

I never played Roblox and tend to be fairly out of the loop, and even I have heard about Roblox in connection with child exploitation. Hope those kids eventually get justice and their predators prevented from harming them.

Went and bought it once it got out of EA. Pleasantly surprised by it being under 2GB.

Your comments made me curious what our threshold for "too new" is, my first guess being 5 years. (Thanks XKCD.)

It's actually

catering to gamers who wait at least 12 months after release to play a game

according to our sidebar. But you pose a good question if Early Access release counts as release, especially if it's been in EA for this long.

In order from 12 to 1 (sadly, Lemmy will not let me number that way, and instead forcibly counts up)

  • Captain Of Industry
  • Dinky Guardians
  • Automachef
  • Word Factori
  • Kubifaktorium
  • Shapez
  • Autonauts
  • Hydroneer
  • Infinifactory
  • Satisfactory
  • Dyson Sphere Program
  • Mindustry

I wonder what it says about me that the only one I have not heard of is Dinky Guardians.

There are a few mobile or web idle/incremental games I have used as a substitute for a Pomodoro timer. Oh, I am really into the game and it only progresses if this is the focused tab? I really want to make progress, but I am in a period of the game where active play isn't that rewarded, and just watching the screen while I wait to earn the upgrade is pretty boring? How about we just leave my phone with that as the active tab, and I check back when the upgrade should be earned? Keeps me off my phone and doing the actual things I should be doing instead. Somehow, "abusing" games like this works better for me than the Forest app which has the explicit intention of making sure you do not touch your screen for a set length of time and instead do something else off your phone.

What's a Pomodoro timer?

There is a "Pomodoro technique" where you work for some longer amount of minutes, often 25, and then take a break, usually 5 minutes. Repeat the process a few times, then take a longer break instead of a shorter one. Repeat. The gist of "Pomodoro timer" is just whatever timekeeping thing you're using to pull this off, whether it be a kitchen timer shaped like a tomato or a phone timer.

I also "abuse" Pokémon Masters EX in a similar fashion. You're expected to level up with some combination of putting them through battles that cost stamina to play through, and some pretty easy-to-obtain level-up items. And although there is an Auto option I have a feeling you are intended to manually do the battles in-game. Instead, I start story mode battles which cost no stamina to play through, that still reward me with XP no matter how many times I repeat it, and have the game fight the battle for me with the Auto setting. I check back when the battle is done and restart it. I have essentially turned this into an idle/incremental game, albeit one with a pretty short time between waiting and checking back in on the game. Free level-ups! Even though it does take much longer than the intended way, which is why I suspect nobody tried to prevent this method from working. I like doing this for some reason, and it's probably the main reason I still keep this game downloaded despite my usual allergy to gacha games.

CrossCode is all about how it plays! That's why there is a free Steam demo! Go give it a try! Take the best out of two popular genres, find a good balance between them and make a great game. That’s what CrossCode does. You get the puzzles of Zelda-esque dungeons and are rewarded with the great variety of equipment you know and love from RPGs. During the fast-paced battles you will use the tools you find on your journey to reveal and exploit the enemies' weaknesses and at the same time will be able to choose equipment and skills for a more in-depth approach in fighting your enemies.

Yeah, I took a look because of your comment. Sounds like something I should try. The art is certainly appealing to me. Appreciative that more games are putting out demos lately.

A lot of !cozygames@lemmy.world and !lifesimulation@lemmy.world games would fit. !otomegames@ani.social are romance visual novels aimed at women interested in men and a lot would fit too.

!infinitynikki@discuss.tchncs.de is an open world dressup game very marketed at women and has that soft pink color scheme, warning for being a F2P gacha game although you can progress without ever spending money. I usually avoid gacha but gameplay is legitimately good and "good gameplay," "high budget," and "for women" is a combination this game hits that I do not see too often in video games. (Other commenter is right there is a lot of girly shovelware.) There is combat, but it's definitely not the main focus. Very soft and pink. You might also like Beglitched (DEFINITELY pink and soft), and Style Savvy for Nintendo DS. I have been meaning to play both of those so I can't offer perspective on if they fill the romance ask, though Beglitched has combat. You might also enjoy Slime Rancher, also lots of pink and soft. Although it's also not combat-free it's not the main point either. Cattails was fun, kind of like Stardew but with cats instead, although as with Stardew combat does exist (though if I recall correctly it's optional and not the main focus).

Now probably my recommendation least like what you are asking for: I love the Touhou Project series. Don't let the male-dominated fandom and the tons of sexualized art of the characters fool you, the games don't sexualize the characters at all—I would feel very comfortable showing them to a 5 year old or Grandma. It is basically a bunch of superpowered women from Japanese mythology/folklore shooting very pretty lasers at each other. The focus is actually combat here, but I figured I'd give it a mention. Not specifically aimed at women but it's not not aimed at us either. Lovely music too.

I always like to see people who go all in on the roleplaying in RPGs.

I do wish people would leave mods that aren't for them alone. There are a bunch of mods extremely not to my taste that I just scroll past instead of intentionally clicking to tell the mod author just how much it is not to my taste and that they should not have made it because I am uninterested in the content.

As a person who spent a lot of time feeling rejected and unsure of why people were happy to be my acquaintance but not my friend, never getting any explanation why I wasn't good enough (the answer was undiagnosed autism and the trouble with social skills that comes with that), ghosting with no explanation hurts me in my soul.

I get why people do it though. How do you know if it's a person who was clueless to what their bad behavior and is desperate to have literally anyone tell them what they do wrong so they can change, or someone who will flip out and get violent or stalkery or super spiteful towards group members once ejected from the group? How do you know it will not spiral into some giant drama, especially if you were wrong or others disagree about if their behavior was objectionable? Conflict avoidance, whether for justified reasons or not, is very very common.
