Shit man I'm glad I'm not a surgeon.
Could you imagine having to take 3 or 4 trips to Home Depot while your patient is just lieing on the bed, passed out and split open?
@lemmy.zip
Unlike in the movies, doctors usually aren't trained in sonography. Sure they could figure out how to scan a prostate, but they aren't gonna go out and buy a fancy 3d ultrasound just for men over 45, and they aren't going to become, or hire, sonogram techs.
And I'd rather take a finger in the butt than have to have another fucking appointment. No pun intended, but it's one finger. Unless my doctor is Andre The Giant or E.T., I think I could handle it.
Those ancient greeks man...they were so progressive, with their democracy and their separation of biological sex from their sexuality.
I'm no historian but it really sounds like Greece was a pretty sweet place, at least for the privileged classes. I consider myself pretty straight, but the idea of truly free love is absolutely magical.
You know one of the most surefire methods of oppression...particularly among slaves or a subservient class...is to control their sexuality? Complete control over who, when, and where you may fuck. Tough to do on a population level though. But we can make certain behaviors uncouth. Make homosexuality a "sin", make sodomy and interracial marriage criminal, etc.
Some things, in our biological and ethical scope, make sense...like incest and pedophilia. Although it could also be said that our knowledge of biology and ethical code also prohibited sodomy and interracial intercourse, while apparently Ancient Greece's encouraged them.
Wdym? If a drug like this were successful, everybody with any markers for Alzheimer's would want to be in on it. They'd make bank for several years, until the patent expires, and then they'd have other methods of extending the patent and prolonging market exclusivity.
Sorry but this is a shit talking point. What drug companies fear is the eradication of an ailment, and particularly by non-pharmaceutical means (i.e. gene therapy).
Even something that's 100% effective in preventing Alzheimer's, would still see a hell of a market.
And if such a drug is possible, then there's the game theory question. Any pharma exec knows that if their company can make a breakthrough medicine...so too could another company. Is it worth it for them to sit on it, only for another company to make the same discovery a year or two later and bring it to market?
My wife has had some bad luck with dentists.
First was the wisdom teeth. Still to this day unsure of if it was a result of the extraction, but immediately after she developed an abscess on her tonsils.
The abscess needed to be drained in the ER, it was so painful. And the draining was painful, too. Not like they got Novocaine there. And then she got her tonsils removed as a result.
Then last time she had an extraction, the tooth shattered below the gum line. Dentist had her for like three hours getting all the chunks out. Her jaw was sore for like a week, not only from the extraction but also from holding that damn position for so long.
If you shock it, that kills the algae, right?
Then where does it go? There's physical remnants left behind. That doesn't just disappear.
Just like you have to skim a regular pool, I'm sure you want to keep solid waste out of the reflecting pool to keep from overwhelming a filtration system that's simply not built for the load.
I got the sense that he was a great dad...he was just in deep with the fire nation propaganda. Lu Ten's death snapped him out of it so much he abandoned his place in succession, yielding it to his younger brother. Not having an heir of his own kinda made the choice a bit easier.
I got the impression that he took Zuko under his wing because he wanted to get a second shot, knowing that losing his son to the war wasn't worth it. Zuko, before the exile, was the rightful heir to the throne. I think his spiritual awakening made him realize that de-brainwashing Zuko was the only way to restore order. He even explained, before Sozins Comet, that Zuko has to take the throne. It can't be him, because that would ruin any chance of stability...regime change coming from the fire lords brother killing or arresting Ozai would spark huge division among top brass.
I also thing most of the fire nation commoners...especially non-benders, knew deep down they were the baddies and were just trying to keep a low profile and survive. The kids kinda bought the propaganda from the schools but the parents would break that spell when the kid was old enough to understand. It kinda feels...relatable...as a parent of a kid who dislikes Columbus and pilgrims, and who rants around them of how history shafted Malcom but propped King up on a pedestal. They were equal parts responsible for the civil rights movement. Malcom was "plan B". "The man" liked Plan A more. And for good reason. But Plan A wouldn't have amounted to shit if Plan B weren't on the table.
Steven Tyler is/was the lead singer for the band Aerosmith, which had its peak in the 90s. He was born as, and identifies as, male.
Steven is typically a masculine name...thought Stevie may be a feminine variety, i.e. Stevie Nicks, the singer/songwriter of solo and Fleetwood Mac fame. Coincidentally, they were born exactly two months apart...Steven Tyler on March 26, 1948; and then Stevie Nicks on May 26, 1948.
Also, Stevie Nicks was married to two different members of the band "The Eagles" (at separate times, of course)...Don Henley from 1977-1978, and Joe Walsh from 1983-1986.
She was also married to two different Fleetwood Mac members...Lindsey Buckingham (1972-1976) and Mick Fleetwood (1977-1979).
Could you imagine? Going about your day, out with your baby, running errands, go out and buy some diapers, put them in the trunk... strapped the baby into the car seat and start driving off. The two of you rocking out to Baby Beluga. You pull out of the parking spot and then YOUR KID IS SUDDENLY MURDERED out of nowhere by a crazy man with a gun hiding behind a badge.

I'm not sure I'd call Ozai a good dad.
Like, at least Vader had a redemption arc. Fuck, Zuko had a redemption arc. Not Ozai. Fuck that guy.
His brother, Iroh, was a better dad...and he got his son killed!
You want a good dad from the Avatar universe...it's probably Tenzin...maybe Hakoda. Aang was an absent father who played favorites.
The inventor guy in Ba Sing Se was a good dad too, his only flaw was that he was forced into helping the fire nation. His heart was in the right place, and he felt sincere remorse for the negatives. Just like Hakoda and Iroh. Not Ozai. Even Aang could be excused...like if there's one job that's more important than family, it's probably "facilitating world peace" and "rebuilding your entire culture from a 99.999% genocide that happened when you were 10"
Edit: I seriously thought I was in /r/daddit. Carry on.
