With Uptime Kuma, I just used ping and http sensors so that I knew my stuff was up. When I switched to CheckMK, I installed the agent on all servers and that brought quite a bit more info in, then I added the Proxmox integration and that gave me the snapshot info (as well as more info). I think it automatically pulled in my ZFS info, like zpool status. Then added smart monitoring to my storage so that I can see that my hard drives have been spinning for 13 years and 266 days 😅

I started with uptime kuma since it was simple and light on resources. I've switched to checkmk community (formerly raw) and really enjoying it. It's telling me so many things that are wrong that I missed. Like that one time I made a snapshot of a VM then forgot about it for 113 days...

Personally, I really like dnf over apt, SELinux over apparmor, and firewalld over ufw, but it's all personal preference.

Thank you so much for this. We just started using it at our school. We were using StirlingPDF, but they went open core 🫤. Personally, I like that there is no auth, it keeps it simple.

Game servers like Luanti or Veloren. For the personal Youtube, Steve on "Ask Noah" podcast has it set to automatically download new videos from a particular channel and he hosts that for his kids. My kiddos are older so I just host general services for them.

TrueNAS (ZFS) needs direct access to the drives. Typically a software raid is considered to be more reliable/flexible since with ZFS it also checks for file integrity. You can set several variables to add to the integrity as well as special vdevs to help speed things up. Integrety comes at the cost of storage, so make a plan for how much storage you need versus how much data integrity you need.

Well shucks, I was hoping for a self-hostable option (wallabag or karakeep).

For work, we use Bookstack, you can use the api to export pages as markdown as a quasi-backup. At home, I have been using Jotty. It saves as markdown, organizes with folders, and has a decent mobile interface for when you're on the go. I just use syncthing to sync the data directory (markdown files in folders) to my backup storage

I'm not near a computer, but I'm pretty sure when you setup your storage repository, you specify what it's used for. I'm guessing you don't have the VM storage selected.

I've never had an issue as long as you have nested turned on. I don't think it needs to be privledged for that

I'm not one for journalling but I was looking for notes and I didn't like Logseq since it was to journally for me. https://logseq.com/
