Thanks!

The cushions are from Home Depot. These ones I believe.

And yeah, I haven’t thought much about plans at the library but I have found some good free plans too. Personally, I like Shara’s videos and the plans aren’t too expensive (I think like $10 for 3 plans?).

A friend of mine made a bench from Ana White’s plans and it turned out great too!

Thanks!

The long sofa part of this has a middle support which was pretty interesting to build I thought.

I want to use cedar but I’m cheap and didn’t want to screw up and waste nicer wood 😅

As a senior software engineer, I enjoyed the article and agree with the sentiment with regards to education (learning is good).

That being said I don’t think I’d recommend to a friend or family member that they go into this field. The job market for juniors is terrible and companies are much more inclined to believe AI can do it better for cheaper - even at the expense of never teaching the next generation of senior engineers.

Personally, I feel more burnt out than ever reading dozens of low quality PRs every day from juniors who clearly do not know what mistakes to look for. All comments by seniors on PRs are addressed by the AI as well so the traditional feedback <-> learning seems broken - particularly in remote work.

I just finished The Broken Earth trilogy and liked it. The first book was by far my favorite and I felt the third was a bit of a “quick, I need to explain everything” exposition dump at times. Overall the series was interesting though.

I’m now re-reading Project Hail Mary in preparation for the movie. I really liked it the first time so don’t expect this time to be any different!

I read The Fifth Season and am now onto The Obelisk Gate by N.K. Jemisin.

The first book was pretty dark and covers some themes I’m not used to reading about (child death from mother’s perspective). I found that a bit shocking but very emotional.

The magic and world building is very interesting and I’m pretty hooked. I think the first book is better so far but will see how it ends in the third one!

I just finished reading the series The Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee. Overall I liked the series - it was more of a business drama / political family drama with a sprinkling of fantasy. I thought the final book was more of an extended epilogue, with frequent time jumps. I found it a bit difficult to reconcile the rapid aging of characters I still felt were young.

I am now reading Blood over Bright Haven by M. L. Wang at the recommendation of my wife. I have really loved this one - it’s been very interesting even though it has been a tiny bit predictable.

After that, I’m debating rereading The Expanse as I really loved it.

Out of curiosity - are there any companies offering to host Immich for you and provide backups and stuff?

I’m tempted to self host it for my family, but my biggest concern is losing data that I self host (and time spent managing this).

I recently finished Isles of the Emberdark which is the latest novel by Brandon Sanderson 😁. Really loved it - tons of Cosmere crossover and some interesting setup for the future.

I also have recently read A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab. Enjoyed this a lot and am now onto the second in the series, A Gathering of Shadows.

I am re-reading the Expanse series - currently on Nemesis Games.

Love these books - I want to rewatch the show now. I have all the actors / actresses in my head as I read :)

I’ve been reading the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas - currently on book #4, Queen of Shadows. Recommended to me by my wife.

Overall I’m liking the series, much better than the ACOTAR series (also by Sarah J. Maas) that I read only two books of before deciding I wasn’t into the spiciness that my wife enjoys.

I think the protagonists are pretty well written and fun to read as (mostly), but find the antagonists to be somewhat shallow. I’ve found the endings of each book to not feel as rewarding as I want and sometimes I feel like there are major exposition dumps towards the endings to explain everything quickly before wrapping up and setting up the next adventure.

I compare a lot of fantasy to Sanderson’s Cosmere so maybe I’m being unfair or biased.. but I like the series well enough so no major complaints.

I’m so excited. Apple has a pretty good track record of producing quality shows and movies.

I like that they have the rights for all of the Cosmere and didn’t just auction off Mistborn or Stormlight in pieces. Having a universe of shows/movies (like when Marvel was in its prime) might be what they’re hoping for with this sort of decision.

Ente does seem pretty much exactly what I was thinking of. Thanks!

Anybody have thoughts on Ente? Am I going to find out later that they’re a horrible company who will steal my data and have to migrate again? 😅

Noob question - I use Linux Mint and have for a year or so. People often have comments about switching distros like it’s super easy to do.

If I wanted to do that, how hard is it? I’ve not really had any problems with Mint.. but mainly want to know in case I want to try a new distribution one day.
