very popular in the UK - an aluminium tray with charcoal inside that you can BBQ on and throw away afterwards - they are often just left behind wherever the fuckers made their campfire in the forest

Very disturbing, it was the last straw to switch my chats (besides family) to Signal.

I had held onto Telegram for years because of their fun animated stickers, but yesterday discovered that Signal has those too, actually all sets from Telegram are available on unofficial Signal sticker sites, so now I'm all sorted 😅

Came here to mention F.B. Purity too, it's pretty much the only thing that makes FB tolerable.

And yea, I only visit FB for some local community groups and pages, and to chat with family in Messenger. I only share articles on my profile maybe once a year, and stopped uploading photos sometime before the pandemic 😅 But sadly it's still the most mainstream social platform in Europe.

yeah, it's reasonably good, only struggles with more niche searches - when I search for seemingly unrelated topics it often falls back to showing ~5 generic links for one of the topics, then ~5 generic links for the other, but if I search for the same with Google &udm=14, it finds the specific niche overlap I was looking for

well, they are now temporarily banned - if we keep getting these dry summers it may become permanent

How is it weird for a UK organisation to focus on the coverage of UK locations? They also don't show France or any other country affected.

afaik some important mod tools are only available on old reddit, so if old goes, so will many of the remaining subreddit mods who haven't left after the API shutdown

I guess they don't assume that their UK audience would want to travel to another country for the event.

A bunch of local groups in my area are only on Facebook, so I still visit every week or so.

I’m baffled why anyone is still on Facebook.

Network effect. I think most people are on Facebook because most people are on Facebook. My local groups have discussions there, local businesses share updates there.

Aside from these, it's probably mostly people addicted to emotionally blackmailing AI slop - "if you don't upvote this 12-fingered child prodigy who carved a lifelike wooden dog, he will think that nobody loves him 🥺😭🙏"

Thank you for hosting these servers :)

Can I just ask, because I find it confusing, so both lemmy.zip and piefed.zip are hosted by a UK company, but lemmy.zip blocks UK IP addresses, while piefed.zip doesn't. What is the rationale behind these decisions? I would get lemmy.zip's UK block if it wasn't run by a UK company, because that law is indeed bullshit, but I can't figure out the reason for discrepancy between the two servers. (Not that I'm arguing that piefed.zip should block UK IP's too, I rather enjoy using the site :) )

Oh alright thanks, if a UK block is likely for Piefed.zip in the future, I should probably look for another instance.

my family still uses Facebook Messenger, it's only the tech savvier people I hung out with on Telegram that I managed to switch to Signal 😮‍💨

I just checked my browsing history, I haven't used any genAI since last December 🙃 (and even before that only a handful of times)

I think I'd be fine...
