What about Geary? Thunderbird? This is a ridiculous "we know better" move. There is 3rd party app support, but it's paywalled. They want your money.

Does it really matter that much if it's downloaded there?

I do think they are compatible with 3rd party apps if you use the paid Proton email bridge though.

I'm not certain if it can work with third party apps but Tuta (previously Tutanota) is a great alternative to protonmail. They also make their client open source so it would be possible to build email clients or bridges fairly easily.

mailbox.org provides bog standard email, from a trustworthy company - no advertising, etc.. No fancy security features outside of the usual though. I use the 1€ per month option.

I've been using the Proton Mail Bridge for a while, which allows Betterbird and Thunderbird (amongst others) to securely work with Proton Mail.

Wasn't it compromised somehow? I remember I read about it (to not use it), but can't remember details.

Is it really even secure? Are we to trust these companies at their word? E2E "encryption" that goes thru their servers, not open source, SoCs that's the real Admin of your device that has direct access to everything including "private" keys.

It has nothing to do with me making anything "secure", because modern consumer tech is incapable of that. but i have my own domain, currently using MXRoute as the provider(because its cheap). Have my own XMP server(Snikket) to chat with friends even tho I can't fully trust it because of how all devices are compromised. Think Intel Management Engine, AMT, Pluton and whatever the heck is going on with the blackbox chip in every smartphone. There is no true privacy with tech.
