That post seems to be missing.

I don't really support this. I understand why people do it, but I'm not exactly fond of burning the library of alexandria of the modern day. Reddit has so much useful info on there and I'd hate to see it get torched. It'd be nice if people who'd otherwise want to delete their content would just edit the content with a big advert for some other platform, a message about how reddit shouldn't be used other than as a historic record, etc. That way the content is still available, but people know to avoid reddit.

I think a lot of the important stuff that's on reddit will eventually get repeated elsewhere. A lot of it is just general unimportant discussion/debate, or particular guides/bugfixing that will inevitably be posted to wherever those communities move to.

But just today my brother was telling me about how it's annoying that he can't check the plex subreddit to get info/help/whatever on dealing with plex. and there's seemingly nowhere to turn to for that right now. so people are basically unable to access info they need.

in time, there'll be some other platforms with it, but in the short-term yeah it's a struggle.

As someone who as used reddit for many years to ask and answer questions on obscure technical topics (solving problems in hobby electronics, coding, and game modding) I can’t support this movement to nuke old comments and I find it really depressing. Reddit is the last source of real information on the internet. I left answers to questions I’ve asked after solving it on my own knowing that someone else would be glad at least one person knew what problem they were having. I hope people like me know better than to join the account burning mob.

Yup. It's sad to see it burn. Though I think it's helpful to understand that even if reddit gets entirely demolished and even shut down, that people will eventually post the needed info elsewhere, when communities get built up in other places.

For example, /r/3dshacks has a lot of info on modding the 3ds game console. But other than particular issues one or two users might have, most of that info can be found on gbatemp, or on discord, and presumably whatever other console modding community pops up (perhaps here on the fediverse? who knows!).

The real loss is: niche content. Reddit was basically the only place you could go for super niche topics. For example, it's the only place on the internet where people discussed stuff like popcorntime or zeronet. since those are dead now, that content will eventually go away, and not be reposted.

For active topics, communities are just people. and posts are just writing. and so what was written and said before, will be written and said again if it's relevant. it'll just be less easy to simply search and pull up, and instead will need to be asked again.

some of the wiki style info may be, but there will be information permanently lost

this, for example, is the only information on this topic that solved my problem. nothing on the arch wiki or any other forum even came close. and it's several "load more comments"s deep, so it won't even be on archive.org

and i've had that experience so many times, where reddit is the only solution to fairly niche issues. i'm not against burning all my reddit comments, but i wish everyone would hold off until there's a public static archive; preferably browsable by changing the url like revedit and unddit before pushshift shut down

I did delete all my content and my account, before I realized that all the content in private subreddits wasn't visible to me, so that's still around. I don't want Reddit to profit off of what I put on the platform, but people can make their own choices about that. It's probably scraped illegally a few different places anyway.

You can actually view your own posts iirc even in private subreddits if you look at it from your user account page. so auto-deleters I think should catch even the private sub content of yours.

That applies for a person's own content, but if someone archives their posts and then deletes them from reddit, how am I or someone else supposed to view those?

I'll happily burn my reddit account once I am confident the fediverse has the legs to stand on its own from here on out.

It's still week one. If this place is chugging along in 6 months, i'll burn my reddit account.

I like the idea of this, but a lot of what I post is technical advice. I'd hate to accidentally delete a post that could help someone out who's struggling with a problem.

Limiting by subreddit might make it workable though.

i'm hoping someone can recommend me an extension to add to comments rather than overwriting them

i'd like to keep all my comments for anyone that finds them useful, but add "due to reddit's policies, i've moved to lemmy" or something to the end of all of them

Just commenting because 1) I have indeed used this tool a few days ago to edit my 9 year history on Reddit. and 2) I want to know what happens now that the thread is apparently locked.

Howdy! Would you mind reposting this over in the megathread? https://beehaw.org/post/550898

It'll help keep things tidy given how hot of a topic this is at the moment + with everyone consolidating there, you may find a more active/engaging discussion on your post there as well!

Locking for now, will remove once you have a chance to repost.

Where are you from? why would you lock a post on kbin that appeared on beehaw? How do you make sure your post gets on the right communities across the fediverse? I'm very confused yet eager to learn.

Way ahead of you.

Nuked my 12 year old account the day of the AMA and I'll delete it in a couple days.

To those concerned about loss of information: I didn't have too much useful information in my comments unless the world is extremely interested in my opinions.

I'm doing it on the 30th, and I hope others choose to do so too. The more accounts that we can get deleted the same day the changes take effect the better.

I googled a script to just paste into the F12 source code menu and it wiped out everything on my account. To be honest i'd been doing that pretty regularly every year or so anyway in case i'd been accidentally Doxxing myself at all with linkable information.
