Red at the Crown

Finally—a male summer tanager (Piranga rubra). I’ve photographed a few females before, but this is the first male to grace my lens. He perched high atop a tall oak at the forest’s edge, just out of reach. Still, with a telescopic lens and a generous helping of megapixels, I managed a usable image or two.

If you’re captivated by summer tanagers and other members of the Cardinalidae family—better known as the cardinal family—step into my photo gallery for a visual feast. Come take a look:

@Swede1952@universeodon.com We've had a family of them hang out in our yard the last couple years. Absolutely fascinating to see.

How cool is that!? I only see them occasionally; they mostly stick to the forest behind my house.

@Swede1952@universeodon.com They've taken to visiting our feeders for sunflower chips. That said the trees around our house have grown up enough that it feels suspiciously forest-like.
