What is a good alternative to watch Youtube ads free on Android?

a year ago by mazzilius_marsti to c/android

I know FF + ublock allows you to do that, but I'm looking for an app solution. Plus, FF on Android is buggy sometimes. I'm looking for things like background play, PiP play and adblocks. Google sign in is optional.

I have tried:

  • Newpipe: works ok. You can even download the videos. The downside is I dont know how to get Newpipe to customize the trending videos. E.g. I want only trending in topics I care about, not trending becsuse the video has the most views during that time.

  • Youtube Vanced: very nice app, you have everything: adblock, PiP, Google account sign in, background play. The downsides are you install YT Vanced from Vanced Manager and there is a lot of fake sites with fake Vanced Manager apk. In addition, I also get a lot of frozen videos and have to relaunch the app - not sure it it's adblock problem or anything similar.

Well, then go through the official repo?

More or less works. Occasionally have to switch servers.

I've always used it with Proton VPN and it's worked fine.

Does nobody use the subscribe function anymore? Only concerned with trending? You're trusting one of the worst algorithms to show you content? Just use TikTok at that point.

Subscriptions feed is nice, but doesn't show other similar channels so I never discover anyone new to watch.

Youtube Vanced has been dead for years.

You want Youtube ReVanced.

The downsides are you install YT Vanced from Vanced Manager

This is much easier than people make it out to be. You don't even need root. Just download the specific APK version from APK Mirror (there's a link within ReVanced Manager that opens a list of search results for you), patch the APK via ReVanced Manager's local storage method, then install the patched APK (just use the "Regular" method for installing).

Make sure you uninstall the stock Youtube app (or at least disable it within Android Settings).

there is a lot of fake sites with fake Vanced Manager apk

Or just go straight to their Github page.

In addition, I also get a lot of frozen videos and have to relaunch the app - not sure it it’s adblock problem or anything similar.

I've been using Revanced since back when it was still "Vanced". The only time I ever had that issue, it ended up being nothing more than a single toggle in Settings. I forget which setting it was, it's been a few years since then. Something about spoofing? IDK anymore. I've updated a few versions since then and it's not been an issue.

FF on Android has improved greatly, I don't find myself switching back to Chrome anymore.

NewPipe is the best solution I've found.

On desktop, I'd suggest Freetube with the local API enabled.

Brave browser. It's simple and it works. Also don't allow links to open up the Youtube app.

As an added bonus it blocks other stuff on websites too.

As an added bonus it mines crypto in the background without your knowledge.

FTFY.

Use Firefox with uBlock Origin. Same thing, but not made by a company led by a total wackjob.

I'm not going to defend Brave but they stopped doing that a long time ago, so you're just spreading misinformation.

Use Firefox with uBlock Origin. Same thing

Not even remotely. Brave has a myriad of other privacy protections.

I've always followed this guide on the xda forums to patch my own revanced YouTube APK, rather than downloading a prepatched one from somewhere else. Worked well enough for me so far, but I am sure there are plenty of other options to achieve the same thing.
