Even so, there is only so much that the mods can do when it comes to users. Under normal circumstances, they might be able to keep them in line, but there is a track record of users either leaving to start their own communities, or flooding a subreddit if there is a controversy.
For example, /r/Steam's moderators could start banning people who talked about steam, instead of the gaming platform, but that also cuts down on their userbase, and the users could just go off and start their own /r/steamier, which is also one of the strengths of how subreddits worked. Users could just go and make their own subs if they didn't like the existing one.
We laugh but this does an excellent point of underscoring the whole power dynamic in Reddit.
Who normally keeps these subs on message, and controls content? The mods.
The mods are volunteers that curate the content of Reddit. And Reddit did a shit job by getting into a pissing contest with their own best assets.
