After more than a century, the centre bounce is no more in the AFL

a year ago by Zagorath to c/afl

The AFL will no longer have the traditional bouncedown to start men's games, and has also ditched the controversial sub rule.

It seems like it's the right call logistically and for the integrity of the sport. But I can't help but feel sad to see such an iconic part of the game go.

Should bounce it at the start of the game for tradition. Everything after that, yes the throw up is a better option.

Sad. There was always a slight chance the ball would take a bad bounce and absolutely bean the umpire.

I sounds like the main reason for switching to a throw was that the bounce was difficult for umpires to do. ... which I think is an interesting motivation to arise after such a long time of using the bounce.
