IMO collecting to never touch it or collecting as an investment is dumb. To each their own of course. It's just not my thing.

I collect cameras and I take good care of my cameras but regardless they are tools and should be used as intended.

Great aunt used to serve us lunch on Depression glass because why not? She wasn't even being fancy, she ate alone like that. My parent's were horrified. :) Being a nerdy little kid who was into Art Deco, I was thrilled!

I shave with my great-grandad's WWI issue safety razor and regularly shoot my 19th century shotguns. Fuck the police, I'm going to enjoy the things I own.

I'm betting your parents were worried you'd break the glass and she wasn't. Like, as long as I can remember my grandfathers had this brass elephant about the size of a chihuahua. At one point I had picked the heavy fucker up (I was 2) and started banging it on a glass table because it made pretty noise I guess. My mother was horrified I would shatter the glass, my bio grandfather thought it was hilarious, and the cable guy was probably worried he'd get blamed for some bullshit that wasn't his fault.

Last time we were in the old mobile about twenty years later, that table was still in great condition. I have no idea how I didn't break it, I was such a dishpit.

Yes and no. There were worried I'd break it, but at the same time worried that anyone would break it.

For those not in the know, Depression Glass isn't especially valuable, but no one typically breaks out a couple hundred dollars of tableware for lunch. Especially when they're kinda poor. :)

If I had expensive dishes I'd use them every meal. No sense keeping the fancy for special occasions, gotta take all the fancy you can get. Especially when you're poor.
