All I want is a reliable lean google drive or onedrive alternative, clean files-only minimal interface

Nextcloud was forked from OwnCloud to add these features and functionality. If you didn't need them you probably shouldn't have been using Nextcloud in the first place.

...no? OwnCloud is just file storage and sharing. NextCloud is like a Google Workspace/Teams alternative.

they are both pretty much the same, support similar plugins etc. and both always were a cloud storage systems
