I've been really impressed by eternum, but I also really like becoming a dik because the gameplay is actually important and a lot of fun.

I second these. Also Sternum is great, but the story is still catching up.
Love of Magic has a good story, and it's nearing completion so now is a pretty good moment to pick it up. It also holds up well to multiple playthroughs, there are things that characters say early on that take on a while different meaning once you understand more about the world and its history.

I personally like NLT Media's offerings. I'm currently playing through the Genesis Order and recently finished Treasure of Nadia and enjoyed the stories for the series.
Other winners for me include A House in the Rift, What a Legend, and Mythic Manor as a somewhat distant third. There are plenty of games with engaging stories but I'm drawing a blank atm.
