Corcoran boots are still union made in the United States. I have two pairs of their original jump boots--one in black and one in brown--that I wear daily, even with a suit.

They're not the absolute best footwear out there, but they're resolable and cost less than $250. I take care of mine, so I have every expectation that they'll last the rest of my life.

Well, union manufacturing workers in the States are kinda unicorns so that still tracks 🫠

I do the opposite of taking care of mine, and they're still going strong after 20ish years. Corcoran boots are damn near indestructible. They've only been semi-retired because I've moved other boots that are nearly as tough, but much more comfortable. Specifically Red Wings for normal wear, and Ariat cowboy boots for actual work.

It’s a luxury purchase, but Lamy makes several fountain pens that will last you the rest of your life. The Safari is a great entry pen, made of the same plastic as Legos. The 2000 is a gold nibbed pen whose design remains unchanged since 1966.

Agreed that fountain pens are more of a luxury purchase due to the extra maintenance required, but a decent refillable pen is a great BIFL thing!

My wife got me a Grafton Everyman aluminum pen a few years ago for a birthday or anniversary or something. I thought it was kinda frivolous at the time, but I carry it with me everywhere now and get really annoyed when I forget it.

Idk if it's actually worth $25-40, but it's not not worth it.

Yes! I feel the same when I leave home without one of my pens. The Everyman was a great pen - I never got one, but I remember wanting one when I can across it on Huckberry.

Le Creuset (enameled cast iron and stoneware) and All Clad (pots and pans). Certainly not cheap stuff, but it will absolutely last a lifetime.

Pro tip: There are Le Creuset outlets that sell new stuff, but also sell the dent/ding versions where you can save some money. It all cooks the same and has the same warranty, but I saved 40% on a 7.25qt dutch oven and it has one minor visual defect in the enameling. Been using it for 15 years and still looks virtually brand new.

I'd also suggest cross-shopping Staub if you're looking for cast enamelware. I've had both and greatly prefer the Staub to the Le Cruset, and it was quite a bit cheaper.

And rice cookers. Best rice I've ever made and I just had to hit a button.

I’d say my Yeti Rambler is probably a buy it for life purchase, I can’t see a reason to ever buy another one unless I lost it or wanted a different color. 1L and very durable

Patagonia is very durable and well-made, and they stand behind their products while also minimizing the ecological impact of their products lifecycle.

Speed Queen washer and dryer. A bit more expensive up front, but definitely worth it.

Using Speed Queen as a benchmark, how does Maytag compare? I think they're cheaper but is the quality comparable?

In my opinion - If this were like a car race around a track, Speed Queen would be lapping all of the competition. The drums in both washer and dryer are huge, with the cycles running quickly. It seems to me that my clothes are cleaner from the wash and super fresh from the dryer. The fluff up feature and near dry feature are great on the dryer. The washer comes with a setting that you can use oxiclean to get a really really deep clean.

Ive heard but not confirmed that they use the same machines they sell to laundry mats, but just add a coin slot and allow them to go slightly faster. Anyway take that as you wish.

What you can definitely see from their website is that they stand behind and perfect a single model of gas/electric/stacked machine, rather than building multiple different machines for each. The company hasn't changed its design much in years.

Great warranty. Techs specific to the machines - I bought the stackable floor model so it had been jarred around by shoppers for years before being bought and needed simple swap. Manuals are online and easy to find. Easy to read error codes with limited items that can cause each error problem. They even have a cycle that runs through all the systems on the machine run in quick succession to check for any problems (I don't know if other machines have this too, but it's the first time I've seen a tech utilize such a cycle).

If you check out your local equivalent of craigslist, fb marketplace, nextdoor, ebay, etc. you'll find very few if any Speed Queens for sale, especially in comparison to the other laundry brands out there. Which to me, means people are likely using them til they're dead, rather than getting rid of them to upgrade to something better.

Sorry for the novel. I've never really been impressed with any of the previous laundry machines I've used before. Most brands are fine and some suck. This brand is great! I actually enjoy getting the laundry done now.. but Shhhhhh!! Don't tell anyone!

Weirdo owner, super long-lasting stuff, I have had the wallet for almost 15 years and it's just as good as the day I got it. Got a folio pad as a gift, it's beautiful.
