19 yrs on Reddit, permanently banned.

4 months ago by ShergalFarkey to c/redditwasfun

No warning, not even a "Don't do it again email" - I had a work account, that was logged in on my works laptop, I made a comment critical of Netanyahu, and the Gaza genocide, which got that account banned from /pics. This was months ago, then I made a comment on pics, on my main account. That's it, gone, banned.

I even have another spare account, from 2008, logged in to that, that's banned too. FFS!

No luck on appeals, so I guess no more reddit, ever again. Anyone managed to get around this?

Yes and no, I guess, I don't know.. I used it every day for almost 20 yrs, It became part of my daily routine. I'm really liking it here though, it feels way less 'shouting into the void' and more inclusive, kinda like early reddit.

it feels way less ‘shouting into the void’

Very much so.

Two things killed Reddit for me.

  1. Bot bans for basically everything.

  2. Over-saturated to the point that your comments almost never get interacted with. So....what's the point?

Same here! I used to leave comments in the early days of Reddit, but then it became clear that many posts I was replying to were just karma farming or bots.

Seeing that made me just stopped using it as anything other than a content aggregator, and only through the 3rd party apps.

When they basically killed API access I moved here. It doesn't have the niche communities that are on Reddit, but when I need information from those I just search it up.

the fingerprinting is pretty extensive, your browser size, screen resolution, computer components,,,etc. it would have to be a new device, IP,a nd different browser, and or long term success requires you to use paid methods.

they ban your digital fingerprint, not just your ip.

I only use Reddit at work on my work desktop. Over the last handful of years I've gone through a shit ton of Reddit accounts, but they last weeks/months until I say one of the many, many things you can get bot banned for on Reddit, which I inevitably do, because I am not nice to fascists and I don't care if I get banned for being mean to fascists.

So I'm not sure about the IP thing.

I'm statically assigned an internal IP, so that never changes. And my public IP should also remain the same for weeks/months as far as I know.

It would be interesting to have a network admin's thoughts on this. Am I somehow being assigned a new public IP on a daily basis? That's handled on the ISP's side. Does my workplace have an agreement with the ISP to change public IP's every day? Cuz sometimes I only make it a day or two before telling a fascist the only good fascist is a dead one and getting banned.

I use the Brave browser and only use private windows. When I'm banned I clear the browser, making sure everything, including cookies, are wiped. I re-open the browser in a private window, create a new throwaway email account, use it to create a new Reddit account, and I'm back in until, like you, I hurt conservative fee fees.

I always thought an IP ban would be bad for their business cuz then one person could get a multi-user computer banned and Reddit would lose users that way. Not that I would put it past Reddit to make bad decisions. I've been watching them do it for almost two decades now.

Network admin here, your internal IPv4 address doesn’t matter, external people don’t see it. Your work likely has a static block of external IPv4 addresses and it’s possible that they are rotated through over time so your effective external IP changes slowly. This depends on how big your work organization is and how your network admin set things up

path: 0 22304345 22306088 22306959, hotness: undefined, score: 11, children: 6
DarkFuture 2 points 4 months ago

But could it be rotating external addresses literally every day or two?

Like I said, I only make it a day or two with some of these accounts before I say something I typically know will get me banned and I just don't care. Then I'm back in with my new account. It's fully functional. I check to make sure I'm not shadowbanned. I get activity on my posts. And those accounts can be good for months.

I just don't see how Reddit can be IP banning if I'm able to do this.

i suspect they are less likely to ban large public IP used by businesses, institutions like schools,,,etc. over a individual, they probably put them in special category.

Your company may use a NAT network. NAT network can be described as a VPN but in a more local and trusted form. What I mean is that since migration from IPv4 to IPv6 is still going on, many internet providers use 1 public IPv4 address for like hundreds of their users, thus providing both additional security/anonymity and cutting costs on equipment and its maintenance. Thus, your company may share the same public IP address with a thousand other users securing it from being banned so easily. You can check this fact by go on sites that show your IP and then compare it with the IP of a router. If they are different, then most likely you are using the NAT network.

i had a same thing going on, although i was using public university computers to do it, which is probably why they dint initially block all of them until last year. different IP, and device was confusing them. if they however detect same positng pattern, or writing style they will catch on quickly,

on another forum, i heard they "trust" iphone, google email, phone made accounts over a desktop now. it did make sense seeing as how you can have a burner device with loads of account and not get banned for having that many. of course adding some IP/proxies, anti detect in the mix.

I really hope you deleted every activity on your 14 year old account because reddit will hold on to your data (even if you delete your account), sell it, and use it to train their AI. Something which they got from you for free while denying you access to their services after you committed time (14 fucking years), paid internet and all that. I wish every single user they permabanned did this. Reddit would collapse in less than one week

Years ago, I had a work account that answered troubleshooting questions in the company subreddit. It was actually pretty great for that, because active users could get their answers quickly, but also the answers were preserved for future users. Our corpirate site had a community page, but it didn't have 0.01% of the daily views the subreddit had.

I left that job years ago, though, and I don't think the sub is as active as it was.

It's actually quite a horrible feeling, initially. I was there from near the beginning, through the glory days to the enshitification. Got banned from a sub by an overzealous mod on AskUK. Then perma-banned for 'ban-evasion', simply for using another "throwaway" account, which was common practice for years.

Now I'm on Lemmy I'm never going back, even if I could (which is harder than you might think).

Yes, this place is way smaller, but I've met almost no dickheads or bots in the year or so I've been here. It's nice. I had a gander at Reddit the other day and it reinforced my affection for this platform and utter disdain for Reddit in general. They've absolutely wrecked it.

Thing is. I moved recently and got a new computer.

Never even accessed these 3 alternatives on my current PC or IP to link them to the banned one.

But they had been used on same PC and IP like 5 years ago.

So that means they keep that info. Also my alt accounts were only banned a few months ago but my main one was banned 1 year ago.

I just happened to try to use an alt a few months ago and found it was also now banned and so were 2 others I haven't used in about 5 years.

I can't see how they can be sure this is the same person. Unless Reddit is linked to some other site and when you log in there, Reddit knows because you gave them your email.

This is one of the reasons I hate Discord. I made an account ten years ago and forgot about it. In the meantime I built a new computer with completely new parts, fresh install of Windows. Then a few years later someone wanted me to join Discord and when I went to make an account, I was already signed in with this old account I'd forgotten about! It really freaked me out. The best I can figure is that gmail is linked to it so since I'm constantly logged in to gmail/YT, I was automatically signed in to Discord when I went back. I hate that creepy crap with a passion. Discord has some bad mojo voodoo going on.

Edit:

I just went back to Discord. First time in years. And it knows who I am! Oh god yuck.

Edit2:

It's definitely Gmail/YT. I just went there using Firefox and Discord doesn't know me.

I had different emails for all those accounts. On some reddit info page it says it uses "current" Ip address and device screen resolution info to link accounts to each other.

I think that might be a lie. They have to be keeping at least 5 years of data . Maybe even older.

I also change my IP address all the time.

They must be tracking some other identifying info. Like device sign in name (Google account/windows login) or something.

I don't know but I was very surprised they found all my accounts so easily and banned them all.

I got banned after 12 years, and a million Karma, in the Post-Inauguration bloodbath. I got around it with alt accounts for a while, but they caught up faster and faster. The first one lasted about 3 months, but by the end, I was getting tracked down and banned before my first comment was even posted.

People like us, who were there near the beginning, when nobody had heard of Reddit, built that site into what it became. Without us, it has become a cesspool of bots, trolls, novelty accounts, Russian Propaganda Farmers, Corporate manipulators, etc., and especially abusive Mods.

They must be using a phone. From what I understand, those have like a digital fingerprint of some sort so it's insanely easy for sites to track you. On a computer, you should be able to just re-start the modem and get a new IP address and wait a day.

The way they catch people, via a computer at least, is that someone living in a suburb will keep trying to immediately re-register and start posting and subscribing to the exact same subs. Since there won't be a lot of people registering from that IP address, they can be pretty sure it's a ban evasion. If you're registering from Manhattan, I can't think of a way they can be sure a new register is a ban evasion.

Except maybe if you're using the same browser which will store cookies from the site. But if you use a new browser or clean out those cookies, you should be fine. Actually, cookies are probably the main way they catch ban evasions. There's probably a cookie that gets placed in the browser when you're banned and when you register the site will check for it.

Do other sites offer identity verification as a service? If they can ask Google and Meta if an IP is linked to a known account, ban evasion would become very difficult.

An IP address can't be linked to a single user. The IP address can just be tracked to an area of roughly five square miles.

When I was a web developer in the 2000s and 2010s the hit counters I used would give me, for each visitor, the browser they used, the operating system, the screen resolution, the IP address, and the internet provider company they were using like Xfinity and, most importantly for this discussion, if they were a return visitor.

So if I was running a forum and I banned someone who was from an IP address in Luckenbach, TX using Bubba’s Fish and Tackle and HiSpeed Internet Service, using Internet Explorer 7 on Windows XP, with a screen resolution of 800x600. And then, an hour later someone from Luckenbach, TX using Bubba’s Fish and Tackle and HiSpeed Internet Service, using Internet Explorer 7 on Windows XP, with a screen resolution of 800x600 marked as a return visitor tried to register a new account, I could safely assume this is the same guy I just banned.

The return visitor thing narrows it down to a single person or at least the same computer and the same browser. Theoretically, I could have written some PHP code that automatically checked this type of thing and automatically handled ban evasions.

I’m pretty sure this is how Reddit does it too. Mainly that cookie that tells them this is the same computer and browser that the banned person used. I think phones have this type of cookie built into their hardware. The Trusted Platform Module (TPM) in modern computers can be used for this as well but I don't think they're using it for that yet because Windows fucked up and decided to try and force everyone to buy a new computer with TPM during an AI bubble.

Plus, they might have Discord type somewhat-secret partnerships where if you’re logged in to gmail, and then visit Discord, gmail automatically sends Discord your email address so you can automatically log in there. I’ve never given Reddit my email so I don’t know if they have this kind of thing. But if you didn’t know and tried to re-register and your banned account had the same email that gmail is sending to Reddit to automatically log you in, gmail is accidentally snitching on you.

Anyone managed to get around this?

Didn't even try. It was the impetus I needed to finally leave reddit. I'd also been on there for a long time, and i was putting in an hour or so each day. It wasn't really doing me any good, and when I adjusted I felt better to be away from it. Lemmy scratches the itch but is small enough that it doesn't consume much time. I do more reading and gaming now when I'm free. Years spent on reddit and big karma numbers are a sunk cost that makes it hard to leave.

I recently got perma banned from a community I'm very passionate about. No warning, perma ban for something that imo is not that controversial (I called a politician a spineless fuck) when I attempted to contest it, the mods muted me. Fuck reddit.

I find fewer and fewer reasons to go to it. I mute many of the annoying subs from my feed. I avoid the ones that are just echo chambers. This leaves a pretty small list and they are getting very repetative.

Huh. I've never got pinched for ban-evasion before despite very regularly using alts to comment in subs where I had previously been banned. I don't honor perma-bans on principle because I think they're ridiculous, but I do self-impose a 30-day ban to let things cool down a bit and avoid attracting suspicion.

Not sure what my secret sauce was, but it was never an issue for me over the 15 or so years I used Reddit.

That said, I'd take this as an opportunity to just stop using Reddit altogether.

Na, apparently they do have the ability to track who and where you make accounts.

I've similarly made efforts to discuss and condemn the brutal genocide in Gaza on reddit and found myself with a perma-ban.

I'm only going to hazard a guess, but somehow reddit knows which devices your accounts have previously been logged in on, and will automatically ban your new account after 1 day.

I've tried using VPNs, virtualized desktops, different devices, made accounts on devices that I have never logged in on, but then when I use the new account on my regular device, it gets banned.

Spez got a taste of that good Israeli money and now outright bans users for questioning or criticizing the Zionist machine. Welcome to the weaponization of the greatest tool humanity ever created - the Internet.

It’s probably the lying low for 30 days. In the 2000s and 2010s, I ran various websites and the hit counters I used would give me, for each visitor, the browser they used, the operating system, the screen resolution, the IP address, the city and state they were in, the internet provider company they were using like Xfinity, and whether they were a new user or not. If the person cleared their cookies or came back after the cookies expired then they appeared as a new visitor. If this info was tied to usernames and emails, it’d be easy to kinda figure out who is who. But not if not if they'd been gone for a while.

Also, I can’t remember exactly if this one company had it’s own IP or it was it’s own internet provider, but I do remember I could spot my ex-girlfriend looking at my sites while she was at work because she worked for this company and it would show up as part of the info. She got weirded out when I asked her why she was visiting my sites at work.

It's very hard on a device you actually use. They cross reference cookies from multiple ad networks and affiliates, they fingerprint your unique interests, your devices, it's actually fairly impressive. I've gone to some lengths and still gotten new accounts suspended after weeks or months. The people who run bots are using clean VMs to do it, everything totally fresh and unconnected.

NAT networks that use shared global IP like a VPN but in a more local ways. Thus saying, they cannot simply ban 1 IP address of a trusted internet provider and cut of like a thousand people just to ban 1 account since this will limit other potential clients and lover their profits. Reddit's greed is also its weakness.

I got permabanned for encouraging political violence: suggesting people draw pentagrams in chalk on a public street. As a joke, not like "show up at this time so we can do this."

They are eroding the definition of "political violence" and they know it, they don't care. Thought is political violence now.

path: 0 22313140, hotness: undefined, score: 12, children: 2
Quill7513 8 points 4 months ago

Redefining political violence has been a tactic of authoritarianism for many decades. It starts with only ever pointing out one kind of political violence (ie, the right does violence, the left does violence in response, only the left's violence is covered). Then comes treating lesser violence from one side as a greater form of violence (ie, the right is using grenades, the left is using boxing gloves). Finally comes what you experienced, the elimination of freedom of expression on the grounds that speech leads to violence, even if what you're calling for is just a slightly weird form of propaganda to invoke thought rather than any kind of violence.

I say all this in the hopes that someone on a different part of the scale somewhere can recognize the signs early enough to do something

The only real issue I've seen so far is that you'll get a thread where people don't read the damn article and someone will say something that we all might agree with if it weren't DIRECTLY OPPOSED TO THE ARTICLE and people jump on the bandwagon.

Getting downvotes for pointing out something that everyone SHOULD have seen is just irritating. But whatever. I move on from those threads and idiots can fuck off. heh.

(I know I'm wrong about many things, but I'm talking about literally people not reading the article and posting something stupid)

You ain't wrong, although it's just hard to fight against the momentum. But I've found it better to try and answer what's wrong rather than just RTFM^[which btw is much older than /. lol, but you're still old school for attributing it there, not disparaging you] as it seems to help a little. Sometimes. But not always. It's human nature. heh

It's not like it's always wrong per se....... like in this case one of the witnesses to an ICE shooting was killing in a crash and lots of the comments are about how it wasn't an accident. But the article mentioned three other people in the car including the guy's sister - and it was reported they took a highway exit too fast. Based on the time........ I'd read "drunk" between the lines, though that wasn't mentioned - but importantly: If it was suspicious, why didn't any of the three survivors mention anything out of the ordinary?

But I agree that it would be suspicious....... if we didn't already have people who would be inclined to speak up not saying anything was out of the ordinary.

So I get the comments - except they should have RTFM.

But that's just one example from today. It happens a lot, but most of the time people here seem to post decently thoughtful posts. And we have very few fascists. Sooooo, that's nice. heh

Naw, the poster should have included more info in their post. That was a result of their low effort.

The people responding are responding to a Lemmy post, in accordance with the info offered. They are not on whatever news site commenting in response to the an article there.

As a rule I do not click through to articles. Posts are not just ad space for media platforms. Include some relevant info in the title and post body. Then link to the article for reference.

There are many who won't click though, but there are a few exceptions to the rule. Like linking a long academic article for discussion.

If somebody comments to the subject of a post, as it's presented in the OP, their response is not stupid.

If the comment seems out of place because of the information left out of the OP then the fault of the confusion lies on the poster for their low effort post.

there is a way, but likely it will cost money, as you need a new device, browser, and IP. its only worth it if your advertising on reddit(that reddit doesnt take a cut), maybe OF people, but people want to advert or direct to thier own business will have hordes of accounts and a way to "look like normal users" with niche proxies and anti-detection browsers.

There is something going on there and I suspect that there is a real effort underway to tie peoples identity to a reddit account. They want a real email or a phone number and if you are denying them this and protective of your data they are getting not a lot from you. They read your private messages and are basically data mining the hell out of everything. Culling long time members seems to be a thing and for specious or no real reason? I would like to think that me blocking all ads and blocking my IP and using an anonymous email annoyed them. I supported Palestine and reminded people about the death of Rachel Corrie so that probably helped. Karma was good 17,000 and 39000 post and comment so I have only two words for Reddit Admins..and they are See Ya!

reddit is pretty much in cahoots with GOOgle have you notice how closely they are entertwined. GOOGLE promotes reddit posts instantly to the top, no secret. plus reddit uses googles AI system i believe too, reddit allows google to scrape the site, also thier anti-botting system, captcha v3 is invisible bot checking system, which apparently triggers the v2, if it doesnt trust you.

reddit also recently made user history, hide-able, so you cant tell if someone is a bot by looking at a evidence of thier comment history.

Well, enjoy Lemmy while it remains less mainstream.

Bots and tech corporations will always infiltrate popular social media platforms to push narratives.

There are companies you can hire that do this.

And the bad people out there definitely do this.

Once a platform becomes more popular, it will have a target on its back.

Before you delete your 20 year old reddit account, take the time to carefully delete everything on that account -posts, comments, chats, everything- they are relying on you leaving that data so they feed their AI with it after you are gone. Simply deleting your account is not enough

path: 0 22318931, hotness: undefined, score: 8, children: 11
buddascrayon 14 points 4 months ago

Won't work. They have backups of everything you have ever done on there. They will just restore the backups and then ban you so you can't do that again. It's the bargain you made when you created an account with them.

path: 0 22318931 22319115, hotness: undefined, score: 14, children: 8
tackleberry 3 points 4 months ago

You are not deleting your account, only to return with a new account. Reddit has become a cesspool and it would be a wise decision to leave with all your data.

You may corrupt your data before leaving so it overwrites the backup. Someone used an auto app that replaced all their posts with random gibberish. It took about a week, this is something you might explore if it addresses your concerns.

edit your data. replace your posts with random single words. that would overwrite the backed up data.

Another route is to sue them, I'll be welcome to a coalition of former reddit users who have been exploited like this to pull resources together and make reddit surrender the backup of banned user data.

9 out of 10 "I got banned for no reason" posts, you find the offending content and think "oh shit, OP sucks."

Not saying that this OP sucks, just that the lack of context is suspect. And of course reddit suck, and mods suck.

path: 0 22304453 22304836, hotness: undefined, score: 10, children: 11
SanctimoniousApe 7 points 4 months ago

OP gave context - criticizing Israel. If that means 9 of 10 bannees are to be considered assholes, then I'll proudly wear that moniker.

path: 0 22304453 22304836 22305249, hotness: undefined, score: 7, children: 5

OP provided their version of context. At face value, I agree with you. But did OP use a racial slur? Anti-Semitic talking points? Did OP call for violence or threaten someone? When I say OP didn't provide context, I mean they didn't provide anything backing up their context. They just said they were banned for being critical of Netanyahu and Israel being engaged in genocide. It's been years since I made a reddit comment, but I know I made many similar comments back then and never received a ban, so either the mods were being feckless and arbitrary (certainly a possibility) or OP did more than they claimed. Either way, we're lacking the context to know either way.

I used to mod a few subs, and I can't tell you how many shitbags would come into the sub throwing slurs and threats around, only to blame us for overreacting when they were banned. That's like the default response to earning a ban. I also saw mods act like power-tripping toddlers who would ban anyone that didn't kiss their toes. My experience was more the former than the latter, but that's just my experience.

Every account I had got perma banned and wiped from Reddit because I was on a temp ban on one of my accounts. I was on one of my other accounts that was older than the one I was temp banned from. Apparently I commented in a sub I had literally zero regocnition I was banned from probably years earlier on the newer account, just showed up on my feed on the other account.

I now cannot even make an account for longer than a few hours before it's scrubbed. I don't have to join a sub, like a post, or make a comment. I'll just make an account, wait a few hours, and get a notification that it's been permabanned.

I had that happen for a bit, but I gave it some time and eventually was able to. I suspect they might look at some browser/IP things that expire with enough time. May take a few months, though. For a few months, any account I made using different devices, completely new email address, new browser, whatever - all banned. But then a few months ago I made one and it survived. Well, until now.

I just picked up another permanent ban in one of the Ukraine subreddits on a post that showed a Russian solder walking with a crutch. Someone was pointing out hat it looked like he was faking it. I replied something like "Well, a drone will probably sort things about either way". Apparently this is supporting violence now.

I've been on reddit since 2009. The place sure has gone fucking downhill. It was bad enough in the_donald days when the admins went so far out of their way and up their own butt to accommodate those fascists, but now this fucking AI moderation is just stupid.

I've lost about three accounts in the past year or two because things that used to be well within the norms are now considered harrassment. I'm fine with polite conversation, but jesus fucking christ they have gone absolutely overboard.

I'm waiting a couple of days before I create a new account, and again backing off my participation there - at this point to just my local city subreddit and one other that I was moderating. But that's it. Fuck the rest of reddit.

I'd consider myself pretty fucking vanilla when it comes to how I behave online, and even I got permabans (not a whole account, but several subreddits). It really feels like you cannot speak about anything online anymore without everyone actively interpreting what you say in the least favorable way possible. I have experienced similar on Lemmy, but at least no one permabanned me for having an opinion yet, so that's something at least.

I'll take a few crazy assholes making weird accusations over being permabanned for no reason or worse: shadowbanned. Especially on youtube, I get the feeling that my comments are being shadowbanned on nearly every channel I comment on. It used to be that one could at least chat with other people in the comments on there, but within the last year, I just don't get any reactions to anything I write anywhere. And I'm the type of bitch who watches cat videos, cake decoration videos and follow channels that cover media like movies and video games.

I have censored myself more, less curse words and such, but nothing helps. People simply don't see my comments anymore. It's such a bizarre feeling after having used youtube since it started in 2005 and all of a sudden feeling like I have been cut off from communicating with anyone despite still being able to comment and like videos.

Gonna sound like I'm minimizing your reply - please forgive me, I'm not: There's a wild difference between subreddit bans and sitewide bans, though. Lots of shitty mods out there because all you have to do to become a mod is make a subreddit that takes off, so the fact that you do get some occasional great mods is the surprise. A sitewide ban for bullshit reasons is much stupider since the admins should be hiring people trained to admin the site properly.

That said… still sucks very much to get unjustified bans at any level. Especially with no true appeal system in place.

Every site will get things wrong....... but it feels like reddit keeps going out of their way to make things shittier and shitter.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that getting banned from a sub is the same as having an entire account removed. It was my clumsy attempt to show how easy it is to get fucked over by reddit and that when some basic bitch like me can get banned from subs I never interacted with, it shows that the values of the site has slipped and that there isn't far from small actions like that to suddenly removing long time users from the platform.

I should have been more specific. It just seems like reddit has rotted to the core and is run at all levels by losers who got a little bit of power and became tyrants with it.

path: 0 22310657 22315924 22316016 22316095, hotness: undefined, score: 2, children: 1
daychilde 2 points 4 months ago

And conversely, I really wasn't minimizing that, either. Because both - sitewide and subreddit bans for no good reason - are fucking dumb. lol. Sorry to have not explained myself well <3

I think for the admins, it's less about the power and more about shit like the reasons Musk is ruining Twitter - money, political gain. But I know they've abused power, too^[Like when a certain founder edited comments of others because they could], so it's probably a combo of all of that.

But yeah, either way, reddit is rotten, and it's a bummer, because it used to be one of the best places on the internet for good discussion, information, all sorts of crap.

Well, here's hoping Lemmy continues to grow. It truly does seem to remind me favorably of reddit's early days, although I wish there was a bit more in-depth conversation on some topics. But I think I'm also a product of previous decades in that regard anyway. heh

So glad I got the fuck out of there. I was almost banned for saying they should take out Desantis like the dirty diaper he is.

This was way back during Trump's first presidency. I appealed explaining that in the same series of comments way worse was said. The mod accused me of harassment for sending a single appeal. It left such a bad taste in my mouth I never really took the site seriously after that and moved on completely several months later.

It was a good thing though. Everything I had liked about Reddit had long been perverted, I just hadn't realized it.

No, you can simply treat Reddit as TV where you should not interact with a content and just watch it. Thus you don't even need an account to browse Reddit unless you are visiting NSFW posts. And even a banned account still allows you to watch any publically available post.

I got banned after 12 years for saying "kill" in the context of a cat hunting for food. I appealed it and immediately got a denial. They said the decision wasn't made by a bot which means a human just straight up didn't read the comment that got me banned.

As for getting around it, it takes more effort than it's worth. They use multiple levels to enforce their bans. Beyond just an IP ban, they can see what device you're on, pixel counts of your screen, browser cache, basically your whole digital fingerprint. It's actually pretty terrifying how much information about you a website can get.

Even if you manage to evade all the technical stuff, the site can track which subs you might subscribe to, your interaction patterns, how you "talk" in comments, they got a whole profile on you. Your best bet of getting around the ban is to get a new device and move to another state. Even then if you join  multiple niche subs that your old account was subbed to they'll figure you out.

If you do it right, and clear all your cookies and caches and other identifiers you can use an anti-tracking browser like GoLogin, but most of those are subscription based and you'll have to run through a VPN and make sure you don't log in on a normal browser on accident.

Using the reddit app on your phone is out of the equation entirely.

Lemmy is a much better alternative, but there aren't a lot of people here. Hopefully reddit continues forcing their users off their platform so the population here gets bigger.

Same happened to me, an 11 year user. I wasn't even evading a ban and I got permabanned:

After reviewing,...we found that you broke Rule 1 because you encouraged or glorified violence or physical harm. Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for encouraging violence against people or animals. We don’t tolerate any behavior that encourages, glorifies, incites, or calls for violence or physical harm against an individual, groups of people, places, or animals. Any communities or people that encourage or incite violence towards an individual, group, animals, or place will be banned.

They then told me the content they banned me for was "scrubbed" and then they provided a link to said content which was, or course, blank. So, I couldn't even see what they banned me for. I asked them to provide the text I got banned for but they only gave a canned response. I then appealed. Practically instant denial. Fuck them. The entire ten+ years I was on reddit I saw incel, gamergate, MAGA chuds posting comments way more violent than anything I ever posted. They are still there, doing the same. I wish I could spend a few minutes in the presence of both the mod and the admin that silenced me like that.

There are ways around a ban, but it really isn't worth the trouble and you can still get banned even after that if you are not always careful. Do a web search..."they" practically walk you through the application you will need to get and how to set up everything so their fascist fingerprint algos can't connect you back to the banned accounts. Just making sure your browser, computer, and external, visible IP is different is nowhere near enough to avoid a (re)ban.

As someone else mentioned, I can still log in, read my old posts, browse, sub and unsub, but can't ever comment, message, or report anything. Strangely enough (and I think this is a mistake on their part) I can still up and down vote posts.

The only thing I really miss (and I despise Reddit because of it) is that I cannot post to ask questions or for help in my local city/state subreddits.

so yeah, agreed. we're speaking about the broad general features here though. (and, of course, statesia centric because where else could we be talking about) the constitution protects you from the government, not private businesses. it's other laws in the titles in the code of federal regulations and various judicial decisions that provide protection for various rights. there's some strange overlap where private businesses fill government functions, but that's a flaw our system not a key feature.

as soon as you temp ban, any new account they consider is ban evasion. originally you could make a new account(hopefully before you were banned) and let it simmer to give the account age(to avoid reddits "ant-new account botting) then you can begin posting. but they look at everything now.

there are lots of crazies here too, but so far the mods in charge don't get too riled up. i've only been banned from one community here because my opinions on trans issues are 'hate speech' if they are more complex than a bumper sticker slogan, but that's not particular to that issue. a lot of people have bumper sticker slogan only opinions about a lot of things and think anyone who dares to think the world might be more complex is 'evil' and 'hateful'.

Your mistake wasn't making the comment, it was that it caught the eye of an admin's alt. It's why r/worldnews goes to shit anytime anything Israel related is ever mentioned, and it's such a sticking point for the admins that they basically had to throw away everything they had built up with the worldnews Q&A and interviews. They even used to pass off admin actions as that of the mods until eventually after getting enough backlash they just promoted the karmawhore mods willing to be loyal to them and forced the rest to leave.

They don't want users or subscribers anymore, they want a product. They don't give a shit how many years you were a member, and they secretly hope you do end up registering with an alt. It's basically a stick to implicitly train you to avoid those topics if you want to continue participating.

If you want to go back to reddit, your best bet is to run on a VM with a different yet standard resolution and to try to mask all the data your browser leaks about you (why there isn't a browser that already does this is ridiculous). Different timezone, location, etc. Tracking doesn't matter as long as you don't use it with your main account. Cycle your IP, which is usually simply turning off your ISP router for a while then turning it back on again, don't really need a VPN unless they want to start banning whole geographical locations. If everything works out, congratulations, you have become yet another organic user reddit has turned into being indistinguishable from fake bot users.

I could go back there but I made a Mastadon and a Bluesky and now a Lemmy.I did a reasonable job of protecting my home IP so I can make another account but I don't care to make the effort. The no private message thing was pretty vile and having to keep an ad blocker active made it bearable. i made multiple accounts over the years to spread out the niche and liability of the bans, but with thier AI moderation they jus ttook out all my 1-11yo acccounts, multiples. one of the last account survived temperorily, apparently due to a bug/glitch when it asks you to change your password(they use this to fish people out so they can ban them)

I was the same. There was one sub I won't name where I made a comment against a celebrity (nothing bad, just making fun of her) and got banned.

I usually delete my Reddit accounts after a year just because I'm wary of how much info you can accidentally reveal about yourself.

Well, I'd made a new account and accidentally posted on the same sub which immediately got me a permanent ban for evasion.

My fault, but no real loss. For the last few years I rarely contribute and just use Reddit for info.

To test I made a new VM with fresh browser, running with a VPN and I still got banned, although it took slightly longer (maybe a few days).

It's possible though my VPN was used on my old account at some point though. But still.

One could also ask themselves: what appeal is there in being on a website that randomly bans you for breathing the wrong way?

I personally was beyond tired of having to walk on eggshells constantly, and while that will always be part of the nature of being online no matter who you are, it does get to a point on some platforms where you're afraid of even posting anything of looking at a thread because it can get you banned by some anti-social loser whose mod status is the only place in their life where they have power. Its just tiring.

If these platforms want to play that game, let them. They can have fun becoming a social media platform entirely filled with bots after all the real people have gotten tired of their bs.

r/pics was the first sub I've noticed that went full political ass berserk mode during 2024. Nothing wrong in having a few political pics there. But when 95% of posts are political and gathering 30k+ upvotes while a really nice and peculiar photo of literally anything else gets like 200 upvotes max, this shit gets annoying in an instant. Political pics was never the main purpose of the sub. But mods shit on the "purpose" in favor of the agenda and popularity.

From the top of my head: clevercomebacks, whitepeopletwitter, blackpeopletwitter, adviceanimals, videos, therewasanattempt, facepalm and probably even more - all turned to be full on political berserk subs. The only way to use reddit today is to participate in tiny small micro subs that haven't got stained by politics yet.

My 13 year old account was permabanned years ago. I'm probably on my 40th Reddit account now.

I only use Reddit on desktop while at work (might as well get paid to use that garbage). I use the Brave browser and only use private windows. When I'm banned I reset the browser's settings, making sure everything gets cleared. I open up a new private window, create a new throwaway account on Outlook.com, use it to create a new Reddit account, then I'm back in until I get banned for trying to discuss my Constitutional rights or shit talk a Trump supporter, or whatever else Reddit bans you for these days. I even have a browser script that auto-adds all my subs from my previous account, so I don't lose them.

Now, I remember when my original account was banned, if I tried to create a new one on my phone and login using the 3rd party app I used to use, then it would be instabanned. So I'm not sure if they log phone's MAC addresses. But computers have MAC addresses too. So I don't know. All I know is this method has been working for me at work for years now. The accounts I create are good for weeks/months until I do one of the many, many things Reddit bot bans you for.

Reddit is a shit platform now and it operates under an unsustainable model that's going to continue driving people to other platforms, so its heyday is past. I wouldn't worry too much if you never use it again. I just use it to combat misinformation, shit talk loser conservatives (fascists), and promote Lemmy.

At a network level, your MAC address is only visible to other machines on your local network. Once your traffic passes through your router, the MAC address is irrelevant and unavailable to the hosts you communicate with.

It's possible your browser/client software is viewing it and leaking that secret to the remote site in-protocol, but fundamentally at a network level there's no reason to be worried about MAC address privacy.
