I absolutely find great value in forums. And I think the success of reddit speaks to that, as well as the urgency to find somewhere new like Lemmy.

I still don’t think reddits going anywhere but this should proliferate alternatives which is a great thing.

Honestly what’s the alternative to a forum anyway? They’ve existed as long as the internet. Sure social media exists but it’s far more ephemeral and you can’t keep old information alive very long.

What's the alternative? Should we all stop discussing in favor of writing articles on Medium?

"The forum" as a medium has a well-fundamented place on the web in 2023, 2030 and 2078, I'm not worried about that.

I actually like forum, since we can express our opinions and discuss about recent situations or news. Is there any alternatives to forum? Ive never heard it. That's why I had registered on reddit, and now on lemmy.

I am part of both mastodon and lemmy. The ability to converse and often problem solve in a “closed” community with likeminded nerds interested in the same niche topic as me is very different from microblogging into the void.

Reddit was the perfect "social media" for me. I don't do Facebook/Instagram/Tiktok, I don't want to post what I am eating or how amazing my holiday is, look at me. Nor do I want to see you make faces and tell me how amazing you are.

Reddit is the mother of all forums, I want to talk to people about specific topics, that's why subs are great. You join a specific sub and talk with people that are interested in the same subject. Because of this you can get super specific feedback or fixes for the problem you encounter.

I myself have helped a lot of people, however since $pez started acting like a biach, I have mass edited all my comments and deleted all my posts across all my accounts.

Here's a link with a paywall remover

EDIT: after reading I'm quite happy I did that through the link I posted above. The author himself admits to not using reddit much, not having any insider information... so he's just spouting his personal bias in twenty paragraphs. My impression of the author was someone who has a "diva complex" ("I realised I was wasting time writing long, elaborate replies on technology threads instead of posting them here on Medium" and gain some sweet sweet ad revenue, I inferred from that) and CEO bootlicker ("many of those throwing stones never owned or ran a company"). Empty and forgettable piece.

Oh I don't think it's forgettable at all. I'm going to save this to pull out next time someone wonders why I have such a passionate hatred of "modern" (i.e. corporate) design people in the tech space.
