Digital ID in the UK: The Government Says It Is Voluntary, But Your Employer Might Not Give You a Choice

The UK's new Digital Access to Services Bill promises a free, voluntary digital ID. But right-to-work checks are a 'priority use case,' and 19 million Britons face digital exclusion.

Even if an employer doesn't require the new ID, remember the UK government said that all IDs will soon have to be verified digitally. That suggests the employer will send the ID image or data to a government server which will respond with whether the person is allowed to work. So all IDs will essentially be turned into digital IDs and the government can make individuals unemployable if they do something the government doesn't like.

The developed world is increasingly forcing people to use incompetently designed technology. The #digitalTransformation movement is being forced onto people.

Just like we cannot rely on the public sector to solve the climate crisis, we also cannot rely on the public sector to deploy well-designed privacy-respecting inclusive technology. We always need an analog option.
