Maybe. I don’t know what an empathy class is but I’m convinced most harmful biases/conflicts/bullying are related to “othering” someone. It’s amazing how many unacceptable things in “others” are perfectly fine for “one of us”. I’d definitely go for increased diversity/mixing.
My own revelation as a teen was a classist one. While we weren’t wealthy by any means, we were comfortably middle class, all the families we knew were similar, and college was assumed. The actual educational value from health class was doing a project with a non-college track kid from a lower income family. I admit to certain assumptions when he was one of those “others” that totally vanished when he became “one of us”.
And exposure to different people has to be as a kid. Here’s where I offend everyone ….. if I can generalize a bit from dog animals to human animals, puppies can usually be socialized so they work and play well with other dogs. However now I have an older rescue that was never socialized as a puppy, and despite all our efforts does not accept other dogs. While I suppose that could be her personality, maybe that pattern generalizes to human animals not being socialized properly
