I was just thinking about this recently, should be a setting during account setup that sets a default so far less is undetermined language.
The selector is, like, *right there*. [Spanish] [German] [French] [Italian] [English]

I used Jerboa for all of 5 minutes before I couldn't stand it. Web interface in mobile browser is infinitely greater than Jerboa lol
The selector is there, at least in Lemmy's default web interface… but it's a pain to use.
I think Lemmy should let you configure one language as default, and as many languages as you want for quick access. Then if you don't mess with the "select language" menu, your posts/comment get your default language. And if you do need to mess with that menu, you'll have an easier time finding the language you want, like this:

(Replace the languages in the "quick access" list with the ones you want.)
"Undetermined" should only appear if the user actively unselected the other languages.
Note by my example you should be allowed to tag a post/comment with 2+ languages. The OP is a prime example of that, sometimes content shows multiple languages at once and there's nothing wrong with it.
Also note this should be separated from the configuration of which languages you're willing to see, that already exists. Being able to read some stuff in a language is definitively not the same as being able to write with it.
My web UI (Firefox, Android) always defaults to English, even though it also offers to let me change it on each and every comment individually.
I feel like people get tired of those of us who constantly say that PieFed offers SIGNIFICANTLY more features than Lemmy does, or will ever do, but OTOH...

Based on other comments it defaults to the last language used, right? (It has been some time since I used PieFed.)

People make a whole ruckus because of the political views of the individual devs (from both sides), and also because of Rust vs. Python, but at the end of the day I like how PieFed adds new things to the table. Every new piece of software brings a different vision, different "I can't stand this papercut issue so I'm fixing it", and with it a bunch of new features.
Although... for the Python vs. Rust thing, I get Rust might perform better but I kind of expect people to be more likely to contribute with a Python project.
Test two
Yes it defaults to the last one used.
You also set the list in your profile Settings menu, so it's not this humongous list of all possible languages but just those that you choose to show.
And "undetermined" is not one of the options that shows on outgoing messages.

You're talking about this list, right?
There's an equivalent one in Lemmy:
However both are for the content you see, not for the content you create. I just think having some way to "pin" a few convenient languages would be great. PieFed's "last used is the one you're expected to use" strategy works fine for 1 language, but for 2+ it still means digging through a huge list.
Hmm, maybe. I only recognize other platforms if they have the platform in their domain (piefed.example.com, etc) so I can't really say.
Hehe, this is yet another thing that PieFed offers, e.g. https://piefed.social/instance/startrek.website says about StarTrek.website that "This is a lemmy instance."
Does it do something now? Didn’t used to.
cries in daily-driving neither Lemmy nor Mastodon
