License Plate Cameras Will Soon Track Phones, Wearables, Infotainment, and Even Your Pets

A new kind of license-plate-reading camera will also scrape the smart devices you take with you, and wrap all that data in a nice little bow for law enforcement and the government.

I hate this timeline. Almost everybody I know is firmly of the, "I don't need privacy; I have nothing to hide!" or, "It's just a little bit of surveillance, and if it can help find murderers, fine," persuasion. All as our freedom is willingly snapped and scraped away.

Almost everybody I know is firmly of the, “I don’t need privacy;

And more... they think YOU don't need it either. They are very happy giving away YOUR privacy along with their own.

I think most ppl honestly don't realize how corrosive it is, to a whole society, when privacy is completely lost.

It seems kinda like smoking? The cigarette today does not kill me tomorrow. But 10 more years, now I have cancer. I can't point to the exact single cigarette that caused that. It was a collective effect. The same with giving away privacy. It hurts us all, long term.

My state has a solid law prohibiting retention and sharing of LPR data, but I have my doubts about compliance and enforcement.

And yes, everyone is fine giving away the personal info and privacy of everyone else. Infuriates me...

so does mine. I share your doubts, because I believe at the end of the day these systems are built to help public officials evade accountability.

its so much easier for a private company to fuck up and fine them for it(aka, cost of doing business) than any of the historical alternatives that pin accountability on our public institutions.
