If the FCC Bans Burner Phones, It Could Be a Privacy Nightmare

Proposed rules would require every mobile customer to provide a government ID. Experts warn the move could effectively end anonymous phone service in the US.

What's the implication on the use of e-sims? Right now I'm an enjoyer of using Cheogram with one of those vacation e-sim providers. It provides me with 30 days of cheap data, and then Cheogram gives me a number for voip and texting. This seems like it would tank the vacation e-sim market in the US.

A lot of eSIMs are not from the country they sell you them for. I've used hong kong based ones to get around annoying registration issues in other countries. They just roam.

The "privacy nightmare" that is literally already the case in most of the rest of the world since 10+ years.

I totally get why people are concerned about is, but the ignorance at display is quite astonishing.

I mean you can probably still use it without any SIM at all?

@schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de

It would not be a privacy nightmare for me. I would just refuse to own a phone. Privacy problem solved.

I know a man who still uses a flip phone and has never owned a smart phone and never had an Internet connection. No android or ios, no apps. He lives completely without Internet and computers and he is doing just fine.

I also lived using only a flip phone and without Internet for several years. In that time I accomplished more than half my life prior.
