A humorous anecdote about how power corrupts

4 hours ago by rockSlayer to c/anarchism

I'm an Anarchist, which comes from a US conservative background in a liberal state, MN. Several members of my family have served in the military, going back at least to a civil war volunteer soldier from MN. This is necessary background information to emphasize that my family is a speck of progressive liberal in a largely Trump region of the country, which I'm very happy about and trying to radicalize them on.

My Grandpa was the VFW MN state commander in 2003 and served as the local commander several years before and after. He was responsible for leading a movement to get a State Funded Military Cemetery in the same county as the local. Both my Grandma and mom have been active volunteers for years and both currently serve the local in volunteer roles. I'm a lifetime VFW auxiliary member and did a year of community service at the local. My highschool graduation party was at the local. The favorite bar of both my mom and my grandpa was attached to the local, and it burned down the year before I turned 21 (it's a conspiracy, I swear! Someone didn't want me drinking with them at their bar on my birthday I tell you!!!)

The lot has sat empty ever since. He also owned 2 apartments next to the local VFW, and a few steps away from where the bar used to be. When he died, those apartments became controlled by the local. The city government decided to make the downtown lot a city park. 2 of the benches are being paid for by my family in his honor, along with several family sponsors of the park. My aunt is doing most of the painting. After moving away from town for several years, I'm moving back into an apartment controlled by the VFW local. One that my grandpa used to own.

While I was searching for a spot to get stoned, I was thinking about what I should do for a new spot. After considering it for a while, I figured that getting stoned on one of the benches owned by my family would do just fine.

Imagine what someone with ill intentions could manage. Imagine someone with similar political or economic "royalty" could do. Imagine if those people had dark intentions.
