I feel like this is much more to do with how much space working has taken in our lives that used to be for things like hobbies and child rearing. We are now squeezed on all sides

Parents used to say, "go play outside" too and it wasn't demonized to let them survive for 12 hours on their own without phones until sunset then by god they better be back inside.

I think modern parents are judged way too harshly for not constantly protecting their children. Thinking an adult has to constantly watch them is kind of new.

Parents used to get breaks and it was just considered a part of growing up, being exposed to the world. I get being paranoid, but that's just how it was, and it was never 100% safe.

True but it's not a simple cultural shift to go back to this. Unless you have acreage it's not safe to let kids play outside unattended due to the ubiquity of high speed vehicles.

It pisses me the fuck off. But like many problems in life, the solution is to ban cars.

Can confirm; am a person who grew up playing outside for hours.
