Commercial Releases treble is too low?

3 months ago by NewNewAugustEast to c/gratefuldead

I haven't seen anyone talking about this, but I can't be the only one. I had my hearing checked recently so I know it isnt me, and I can compare some of them to other recordings.

For example Daves 59. I know the SBD didn't pick up too much on the cymbals (evident from Charlie Millers SBD transfer) but I hear them clearly in the AUD's. I also hear the more on Charlie Millers SBD than the commercial release.

Same thing with a lot of the 1978 box set.

Now either they are preserving what the SBD did, OR does Jeffery Norman just master that end low?

I know I am used to the old cassette days where lots of high end came through, but I feel like they have rolled the treble off way too much to the point of missing that part of many shows altogether.

Seems like a mixing move from what you described. Maybe they were trying to get rid of high end noise or even used some corrective plugin that killed treble in process.

I'm noticing it across several releases, not all, but several. Yes it seems like they are pulling those freqs down, or not adjusting them up at all. Makes me wonder about what they are using for noise filtering.
