Introductions Are Hard

2 months ago by Rin to c/home

Hi!

I'm gonna try to do an introduction post, bear with me.

I go by Rin (shocked this name wasn't taken already, it's fairly popular) primarily, especially these days online. I'm on one other Lemmy instance, but thought this one looked friendly too, so I decided to stick my head out of hiding and see what was up.

Some things about me!

  • I live with 3 dogs and a Creature ™ (he's theoretically dog shaped, so we call him a dog) and the latter and one of the other dogs are mine. All four are rescues from Texas that have mostly traumatic backstories except the one who was part of an "oops litter" that got handed over to a rescue to place the dogs. Creature ™ is named Champion and he's a spaniel with some golden retriever in there, while Bowser is a dutch shepherd and plott hound mix.
  • I've been playing video games since I was three years old! It's debatable what my first game was, exactly, but it was either Legend Of Zelda: A Link To The Past, Super Mario World, or Mario Paint. I'm mostly a PC gamer now (I do have a Switch laying around collecting dust for the most part) and I like a lot of different games and genres. For example, very excited about the release of Fields of Mistria out of early access, but was also just rolling around playing some Remnant 2.
  • I love writing. I primarily do a lot of roleplay with heavy emphasis on worldbuilding, but I've been burned out on writing by myself for a while. It's been a lot of "create what you want to see" and eventually I got tired of doing that alone when I found out what forum roleplay was. I tend to write a lot of darker topics but I don't actually write the "dark" parts out. Those all go in the history. I'm more interested in writing the healing process and getting characters what they need.
  • I've been working on learning Linux while trying to set up some home servers for media and some other things (save me RSS feeds, save me from having to go to Substack to read about tabletop rpgs...) but admittedly I'm not very good at it and I need a lot more practice. I've been at it for at least a year now, but I still feel like I don't know anything, hahaha.

That's about it! As for an ending, if you could be any animal, or Creature ™ that is real (or not!), what would you be?

Four dogs lined up in a kitchen waiting for food

You're so right! Here they are lined up for their Saturday scrambled eggs. They wait in exactly the same places every Saturday.

From left to right: Maggie (female, sheltie mix), Charley (female, bully breed mix), Bowser, and The Creature Champion.

Welcome to the .zip!

Cool of you to take care of rescued animals, kudos! And yes, personally I'd say the .zip instances run by the magnificent @Demigodrick@lemmy.zip are among the best of the best!

May I ask for a small continuation of the introduction? I'm curious, in a little bit more philosophical aspect, what drives you to take care of rescue animals? And what do you want your future to look like?

Hey, great question!

A small note that I've taken in another type of rescue animal before (I used to have pet rats, and several were rescues) but Champion and Bowser are my first rescue dogs.

I think my drive comes from the fact that, at least for my rescues (rats and dogs) they were likely not going to be easy to adopt out, and I felt like I had the resources and experience (and in the case of the dogs, I have training to work with dogs specifically, it was a previous job) to give them at least the best home I could make it.

It was less the backstory (though I won't lie and say it doesn't sway me) and more that I wanted more than anything for them to have a good home, even if they are "difficult to work with" or have unique needs. All of them deserve care and homes, and I guess in some way I feel like it gives me purpose to do so. Having animals has helped my mental health a lot, not gonna lie!

After my first dog passed (not a rescue) when I was in my twenties, I decided that he would've wanted me to keep giving animals a home. So I think, in my future, there's going to be more rescue dogs. I would love to have a more private space for them (I live in the city) where they don't have to deal so much with lots of activity that might rile them up, and can relax. Frankly, too, I'd enjoy not being boxed in so close to my neighbors.

I'm not sure if I answered your questions very well, but I tried, hahaha.
