The Greenland government’s statement said it “would not be proportionate” to demand the equipment be removed.

Have they learned nothing? Trump will keep taking more, inch by inch, until he feels consequences. His poll numbers are at historic lows, and he is busy with Iran, now is the time to stand up to this menace.

I'd just let that shit sit there and keep telling them "we're working on it" with the approval process. I would definitely keep stalling until November to see what happens.

Just arrest and detail the mongrels! Don’t they have ICE there?

You can’t be reasonable with the Demented ad that’s a sign of weakness.

This so strongly feels like the obvious play. Seize the equipment, let them buy it back, require payment for delivery outside of the country. If they haven't bought it back within 3 months, auction it off to someone else

No it wouldn't be proportionate.

They should fuckind seize the equipment, expell all the deciders involved on site, and ban all senior managers of that company from entering the country again.

The fact that he's busy with Iran is half the reason this is happening. Trump needs a win and probably reckons that he can quickly drive a tit-for-tat escalation over Greenland oil rights in time for the US midterm elections. Right now, his approval ratings are in the toilet, even to a certain extent with voters who have voted for him before... and it's not because his voters disapprove of his law enforcement policies or because of his being all over the Epstein files. It's because right now he's demonstrating major weakness in Iran. He looks weak, and that's the one thing he can't afford to be seen to be.

My point is that he obviously sees Greenland as a quick win. He has some basis for this opinion: Europe is currently hopelessly dependent on the USA for our security. We're working on fixing that, but aside from a few exceptions, we've only been working on it for a few years; we haven't spent decades preparing for a "what if the USA tries to fuck us?" scenario the way Iran has. The USA is busy with Iran, but we're busy with Russia in a way that the USA simply isn't. Right now the EU has Russia sniffing around its eastern border, and a sudden US rug-pull could be disastrous. Both sides are aware of that, which is why the EU has been trying de-escalation so far.

Trump, like Putin, will keep pushing for as long as he's allowed - but the solution of "stand up to him" only works if we can follow through. You don't pull a gun if you're not willing to fire it. Acting tough now and then quickly capitulating later wouldn't help, so the key question is "if we push back and Trump doesn't back down, can we put our money where our mouth is? How far are we willing to go with this if it turns into brinksmanship?". I honestly don't know what the answer to that question is, but European strategists are better briefed on the logistics of the situation than I am, so hopefully they do, and react accordingly. I suspect that the European response will be subtle but firm, moving JUST ENOUGH resources into Greenland's vicinity to let Trump know that if he DOES try something, it would get messy and wouldn't be over quickly enough to give him the quick boost he's looking for.

We all know the US is a fascist country and will continuously push for more power over everyone else in the world. You aren't all that special for knowing this. The bigger question is what should be done about it?

It's a funny thing when people say they know better than everyone else but at the same time have no idea what to do.

I notice YOU didn't outline any answers, bub. ......but i'm just teasing you.

It sucks being in the US and trying to fight against fascism. There are no easy answers. I could go out and do something that would cost me my life and still have no effect - and as I don't believe in the afterlife, this is all we get. I would be willing to sacrifice myself if it would actually make a difference that made it worth it, but it wouldn't.

Internally, I don't think we can fix this problem. But thanks to our military, it makes it incredibly unlikely anyone else can help us.

We're hardly unique, though. Look at the shitshow of Russia. They are falling apart as a country and STILL nobody will take care of the problem because they have nukes.

And so many countries are on the verge of fascism rising. My only hope is that Europe will see fascism in the US and stand up stronger against it while they still can.

My main hope with Greenland is that Trump is so fucking inept that he won't manage to actually accomplish anything. Like with Iran.

The US is not a fascist country. The Trump administrations have been and are fascist, especially the current one. And the reasons many people voted for this is because they've been manipulated by political propaganda into believing Trump was the right choice. And the incentives of capitalism and the ineptitude of the democratic party aren't helping.

Rules:

  • Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:

    • Post news articles only
    • Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
    • Title must match the article headline
    • Not United States Internal News
    • Recent (Past 30 Days)
    • Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
  • Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.

  • Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed.

  • Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.

  • Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF OCTOBER 19 2025

  • Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.

Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.

  • Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.

  • Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.

We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.

All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.
