Democracy in China is very alive and well, contrary to Western public opinion.

Bullshit. Xi Jinpeng is President for life now. There is Chinese Democracy I suppose... in Taiwan. Which is under threat by Xi, just as there was democracy in Hong Kong before Xi snuffed that out.

Also the Nazis valued racial homogeneity, did that result in more democracy and freedoms?

You're trying to make the facts fit a racist narrative. The reality is that cultural changes result from living in a free society. The culture doesn't change in the same way in all places. The only way to have homogeneity is under an authoritative regime that forces people to all live the same lives. That isn't freedom.

FFS there has been two languages in Canada for it's entire existence. We've never been homogenous.

That would require new equipment, new equipment requires training, training costs the airlines money.

There's a reason the 737 has been flying since the 1950s. Making a new plane means it would costs the airlines the same amount of money in training to buy a plane from another manufacturer. By continuing to use the same equipment, Boeing has an advantage over the competition, no matter how many people die because of it.

Are you not aware there are a number of majority Muslim states in the world? There is only one majority Jewish state and you want it gone, while being suspiciously vague about how you want to accomplish that.

There's a good case to be made for the Roma to have a state, but their history is being nomadic (so where would that state be?) and there doesn't seem to be the will within the Roma people to form a state.

Since you're making silly comparisons with other ethnicities, do you think it's wrong for indigenous people to claim a cultural connection to the land? If it's wrong for Jews to feel a connection to the land of their ancestors then it must also be wrong for indigenous people to feel a similar connection to the land of their ancestors? for that matter, do you feel it's wrong for Palestinians to feel a connection to the land of their ancestors?

Personally I'm pragmatic. Everyone has to live somewhere and people have a right to live where they were born, otherwise you end up with stateless people who will inevitably be oppressed. Like the Roma. More than 80% of the Jews in Israel were born there, so they have the right to live there. I was born on land that was taken from other people in the past, but I have a right to live in my country, because where else would I live?

I hope that many countries would allow in Jewish if we see a repeat of the antisemitc hatred of the past. We are currently headed in that direction. But I do recognize that antisemitc movements in the past and in the present are international movements (oh the irony that the real global schemers are the antisemites). So there's no guarantee that there will be any country that will give safe harbour to Jews... except for one.

I bring up the Night of the Long Knives to remind you want happens to socialists that become adjacent to fascists. Y'all are so busy congratulating yourselves for seeing some problems with capitalism and discovering antisemitic conspiracy theories for the first time in your lives, you don't see the pattern you're following.

The best argument for a Jewish state is to just read what people post on this site.

The problem is you're only thinking about what's happening on the other side of the world. I'm thinking about what's happening where I live. You're ignoring what is happening to Jewish people because you don't want to upset your allies in your movement.

You're not the first person to look the other way when antisemitism was happening. You're not the first person to be in a movement that will ostracize you if you show any empathy for Jews. You have to continuously go back to the well and talk about what's happening elsewhere in the world while Jews in your own country are victims of racist violence.

There are very strong parallels between your behavior and the behavior of groups in the past. You're in a hate group. You don't want to see yourself as a member of a hate group, so you won't look at the violence perpetrated against Jews that have never even been to Israel. You can't consider that this violence is being done by the members of the same group you're in.

It's the same with white supremacists you know. If exposed to something that is clearly hateful towards black people they will go back to the warm comfort of a stream of information showing black people committing crimes.

Did you do that after the Bondi massacre? After you catch a glimpse of a news article about synagogue being shot at? Just go back to a stream of data depicting Jews doing terrible things to cleanse the doubt from your mind so you can stay loyal to your hate group?

Yeah directory would make more sense if we're talking about something that contains phone numbers.

I guess it makes sense to call /proc a directory, but the things under /home? I interact with a lot of that stuff with a file manager and there's folder icons on them, so...

There is no logic to who you're told to be angry at. It's just easier to control people if they're made to be angry at some group of people. It doesn't matter which.

That's why it's important to remember when you're on the internet and find yourself becoming angry at a group of people to stop and ask yourself "is this someone trying to control me?"

Better? Conspiracy theories today are dumb as shit. When people had to navigate by the stars, they knew the Earth was round. Now you can show someone a hi-res digital images of the Earth taken from space and they'll still insist it's flat.

Sure people believed that carrying bananas on a ship and/or going through the Bermuda triangle was bad luck, but at least there was correlation between these things and ships sinking. They didn't get the causation right, but there is at least some data there. Now everything is just straight up lies, usually with some kind of racist intent, and most modern conspiracy theories fall apart as soon as you ask "but why would they want to do that?"

Kinda. Had the CEO want some code changed while the VP of my department was on vacation. Changed the code, and the VP had a grudge against me afterwards because it was code he wrote. A year later a project failed (due to mismanagement) so it was blame game time and the devs got blamed and it was firing time. I didn't work on the project that ended in failure, I was working on a different project which was a success.

Guess who got fired?

I guess technically it was because the VP didn't like me. But the reason he didn't like me is because I did my job and made the software work the way the CEO wanted it to work.

That's just how she goes. Catch-22 scenarios happen no matter how likable you might be.

That's bullshit from the oil companies. They did a "study" that concluded that, but if you read the methodology, they made the assumption that the reusable bag would be unusable after 20 uses.

Meanwhile I've been going to the grocery store every week for quite a few years using the same bags without much issue. I've had one strap on a bag break after ~10 years of use, so there's that I guess. Still haven't thrown it out, keep meaning to repair it which I never get around to doing.

Anyway, if you read between the lines of the study conducted by the oil companies, if you reuse the bag more than 20 times (half a year of going to the grocery store every week) you are reducing plastic waste.

Anyone who cared already had a good idea about what the NSA did. Go and read The Cuckoo's Egg, a book published in 1989 goes into what the NSA does. it was public knowledge in 1989 that the NSA was monitoring all phone calls and all internet traffic back in the days of modems.

Nobody cared back then and the NSA continues to do what it does and nobody cares now. Nobody actually cares about privacy and constantly willingly share pretty much all information about themselves that's possible to be to be put onto a computer.

Snowden essentially just revealed that the NSA exists to people that were ignorant of it. But while doing so he revealed other state secrets to adversaries.

When the EU makes laws that require companies to disclose they're tracking you, people are angry at the EU because the cookie popups are annoying. It's very clear people would rather be tracked without knowledge of it than have even a popup on their screen. All of the information these companies collect is bought and sold regularly.

It's trivial for the NSA to just buy all of your purchase history and all of your activities online because all of that is tracked by marketing companies and no one gives a shit. Suddenly you're upset if the government knows what everyone else knows? It's like putting your personal information on a billboard and getting angry if someone that works for the government happens to drive by and see that billboard.

The only thing of significance that Snowden did was share specific state secrets to adversaries. He currently lives in Russia and says whatever Putin demands that he says. He's just a Putin stooge now.

People like the narrative of this guy who blew the lid on something nobody knew before, but anyone who cared to know already knew the NSA monitors communications, it's kinda their whole thing. According to the narrative, the evil governments are after because he revealed the existence of the NSA. The truth is the existence of the NSA wasn't a secret it's just the ignorant didn't know about it. The whole point of the NSA is to monitor communications, and it was widely known the degree to which they did this. The budget of the NSA is something you can see in public records.

Not long after the Snowden story went from the limelight, everyone went back to not caring about the NSA. Nobody actually cares about privacy, they just pretend to be upset about it for a short time before there's some other story to pretend to be upset about.

It’s a list of locations of files.

It doesn't tell me which sector of the hard disk the file data is stored when I type "ls". it lists the files within the container in the path provided in the command line or aprovided by an environment variable or whatever. What should we call something that contains files?

In Windows the command “dir” is used instead of “ls”

Yeah they were called directories in DOS.

The icon is a folder in both Windows and in every Linux desktop environment I've seen. It's not that it's incorrect to call them directories. It's just that it's not wrong to call them folders.

They could make an effort to verify the content they're sending out to people.

A big reason why traditional media is dying is that they have to verify the things they publish or they'll get sued. Social media can use algorithms to build narratives based on lies without any liability. And people will believe those lies (because they're tailored towards their personal feelings) and start distrusting anything that's telling the truth.

And yes they will annoy you with checkboxes and dialogs like the cookie dialogs on most sites now. But the reason why you get those is because they don't want you to have privacy and so do the malicious compliance things and annoy the shit out of you instead. They know you'll blame the government instead of being angry at them for wanting to violate your privacy.

Same situation here... they could put resources into verifying the things they tell you is true. But lying is more profitable, so they'll put on a bunch of annoying dialogs so you'll be angry at the government instead of being angry at them for wanting to lie to you.

Yeah there's some things like cleaning products that are US only at the grocery store, but they have Canadian made alternatives in Canadian Tire. Don't know why people are hating on Canadian Tire, they seem to be a little bit better than the grocery stores on this to me.
