How much does positive thinking help?

When you actually find the mindset shift it helps enormously.

Just forcing yourself to go through the motions and say the positive sensence in your head doesn't. But my therapist has really been helping me find that headspace

In a world of shit that seems to just get darker every day it is hard to do but there is always good and it's good for you to take time and look for the good bits. I just wish you did not have to squint so hard to see the good bits.

You're amazing ladybutterfly! Your work is one of these things i look out for.

It's so easy to fall into the rut of cynicism but that quickly leads downhill

Actually, it works great for me. When I'm having the absolute worst day ever, I tell myself out loud one nice thing. Can be as silly as saying "I like that my chair leans back" or "I think that rock is pretty". It will usually drag me out of the rut.

Personally, I believe in moderation in this regard. Some people are toxic positivity to the point that they're barely indistinguishable from reborn christians, or come across as ableist. And there's a cross over with the people who believe you can think your way out of mental illness instead of taking meds.

On the other side, there's also toxic negativity. So I think it's important to recognise both the good and why we fight and live and love in the first place, and to recognise that there's something bad that needs fighting.

To quote a Bad Religion song: "spirit shine all the time can render you blind."

It really depends. If you know that you catastrophize often, that things usually come up better than you expected, then yes, counter it with positive thinking.
