for anyone curious, the linguistic term for this is "expletive infix"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expletive/_infixation?wprov=sfla1
#language #linguistics
Fascinating
A more fundamental theory due to John McCarthy is based on prosody.[2] Its basic principle is that "the metrical stress tree of the host is minimally restructured to accommodate the stress tree of the infix". For example, although unbelievable and irresponsible have identical stress patterns and the first syllable of each is a separate morpheme, the preferred insertion points are different: un-fuckin'-believable, but irre-fuckin'-sponsible.
Is everyone including all of the @βs in every comment as a joke, or is this some sort of bot thing?
Ah I get it. TIL, thanks!
@Darkard @NickEast_IndieWriter oh damn, that's painful to look at. It's Phila-fuckin-delphy-fuckin-A.
Or Philly Fuckin' Philly if you want to sound halfway local, especially if you're at an Iggles game.
@NickEast_IndieWriter @linguistics @humor@fedigroups.social @humor@lemmy.world @aiop Indeed it does. But is it really that 'fuckin' can only be inserted before a stressed syllable? Or that any syllable *following* 'fuckin' becomes stressed?
As fuckin' fantastic is just as valid as fan-fuckin'-tastic ... π€π
@GramrgednAngel @NickEast_IndieWriter @linguistics @humor@fedigroups.social @humor@lemmy.world @aiop I don't know what planet those editors live on then, because I've literally never heard a single person in my entire life say "unbefuckinglievable"".
@MiaMarkTwo @GramrgednAngel @NickEast_IndieWriter @linguistics @humor@fedigroups.social @humor@lemmy.world @aiop judging by this thread it seems to be a matter of debate, as there's the stressed syllable factor and the clearly delineated morpheme factor pulling in opposite directions.

@GramrgednAngel @Yuvalne @NickEast_IndieWriter @linguistics @humor@fedigroups.social @humor@lemmy.world @aiop So unimportant you had to have an entire editorial discussion about it? π
@Yuvalne @GramrgednAngel @NickEast_IndieWriter @linguistics @humor@fedigroups.social @humor@lemmy.world @aiop Nope. It's a clear case of rules (incorrectly) trumping style, in an "up with this I will not put" way.
Nonsense.
@GramrgednAngel or it's the latter, because it's "bleevable" with the first syllable stressed.

If you are curious about how insertions for emphasis work in detail. There are way more than just fuck, too.
@Gladaed @NickEast_IndieWriter Who the fuck put that bastardin fuckwit in charge π
