Troy Aikman: Cowboys' championship drought is hard to fathom

a day ago by liquorice to c/nfl

When Troy Aikman won his third Super Bowl with the Cowboys after the 1995 season, he never dreamed that ahead of the 2026 season, it would still be the team's last.

No it isn’t at all.

That is the beauty of the Salary Cap and Free agent processes. Teams can’t just buy a championship. Teams can shed draft picks that don’t pan out. The era of a Steve Young backing up a Joe Montana doesn’t exist anymore.

Jones bought the Cowboys for an absurd number and then hired a head coach who was at the top of his game. Both Jones and Johnson claim they are the architects of the team that won three superbowls. Who knows which is correct but it is clear that their partnership was very successful. While Switzer was the head coach of the third one. By all accounts even his own he wasn’t running shit, he was there for the ride.

Jones and Johnson had the balls to trade away their best player, Herschel Walker, to the vikings and that netted them five draft picks that they used to get a core of guys who don’t get the headlines that allowed the “triplets” to succeed. The Walker trade is generally listed as one of the worst trades in history and really fucked over the Vikings, but that is Vikings fault, not the Cowboys.

Jones did a lot of things early in his owner ship of the Cowboys that is the norm now. He fired the legendary coach, who was done. He fired other key personnel in the organization who were also done.

All those players that Jones picked up in the late 80s and early 90s aged out in 96.

In the free agent salary cap world you have to earn the championship every year. The Cowboys haven’t done that.

That doesn’t seem very surprising. By my count, since the last Cowboys title, only 13 of the 32 franchises have won a Superbowl. It takes a lot of things falling into place to build a contender, and even contending does not guarantee championships (just ask my poor 49ers over the same period).

What is a little surprising is that they never even got close.
