Why many women with ADHD feel overwhelmingly controlled by their hormones [archive link in post]

People with ADHD are unusually sensitive to hormone shifts. Psychiatrists have started to pay attention, creating strategies to address the intense emotions and cognitive challenges caused by these changes

20,000 upvotes for you. This is exactly what my mom and I (both ADHD) were discussing 2 days ago in terms of her symptoms. And it's exactly what I experiences on hormonal birth control. Thank you!

Birth control was a nightmare for me, and I tried about twelve different kinds. I am not excited for perimenopause. But...

Having spent years feeling embarrassed by my inability to cope with life like a so-called normal person, it felt good to finally have an explanation, if not a solution.

It feels good to know that more research is being done, that women's unique needs are being looked at under a microscope after going so long being invisible, or the subject of pseudo scientific asshattery.

I have a friend who was eagerly awaiting perimenopause because of the calm she felt postpartum. She's on HRT now because she discovered that she does better on the oestrogens. It was just the fluctuations that were wrecking her the whole time.

Even birth control is nowhere near as even as a shot every few weeks once the maniacal moon twins finally take a break. Anyway, whatever ends up working for you, don't be afraid to experiment and advocate for yourself, Loudly.đź«‚

That's interesting to hear. Doctors are usually too busy throwing antipsychotics at me to think about hormones, now that they've stopping blaming my period, exercise, sleep and general over-reacting.

I have learned to be very loud when it comes to anything medical. I should loudly ask about hormones, too.

Women only trans inclusive This is an inclusive community for all things women. Whether you're here for make up tips, feminism or just friendly chit chat, we've got you covered.

Rules…

  1. Women only… trans women are women, and transphobic or gender critical talk isn’t allowed. Anyone under the trans umbrella (e.g. non-binary, bigender, agender) is free to decide whether a women's community is a good fit for them.
  2. Don’t be a dick. No personal attacks, no aggression, play nice.
  3. Don’t hate on groups, hatefilled talk about groups is not allowed. Ever.
  4. No governmental politics, so no talk of Trump actions etc. We recommend Feminism@beehaw.org for that, but here is an escape from it.
  5. New accounts or users with few comments may have their posts removed to prevent spam and bad-faith participation.
