Liberia to take in up to 1,200 US deportees within a year

Liberia has announced it will receive up to 1,200 foreign nationals deported from the United States – one of the largest known deals struck with African countries as part of President Donald Trump's unprecedented bid to drive out undocumented migrants.

"Liberia intends to accept up to 1,200 persons to be transferred from the United States of America within a year," the West African country's government said in a statement.

A first group of 20 deportees are due to arrive Thursday, it said, adding that they were "free to depart the country when they so desire" or apply for asylum.

The Trump administration has said it wants to send to Liberia the Salvadoran immigrant Kilmar Abrego Garcia who became a symbol of mass deportations after he was wrongfully expelled to El Salvador last year, The New York Times reported.

Married to an American, Garcia has since returned to the United States and has taken legal action to be able to remain.

That is what I came on here to find out, if they were being sent straight to prison for life. I just read about some African country, forget it's name, Eswantinni was it, or no some other country you never hear about in the news.

The US is paying them to keep these people in prison without charge for life, they are abused, forced to buy most of their own food with money from family sent from abroad, and all the rest.

It's hard to believe the US is ok with this. The US of the 90's for all of it's faults, wouldn't accept this.

Liberia is like the only one that makes logical sense. A country kind of founded by American deportees.

What is global news?

Something that happened or was uncovered recently anywhere in the world. It doesn't have to have global implications. Just has to be informative in some way.

Post guidelines

Title format

Post title should mirror the news source title. If you don't like the title of article, look for an alternative source instead of editorializing it.

URL format

Post URL should be the original link to the article (even if paywalled) and archived copies left in the body. It allows avoiding duplicate posts when cross-posting.

[Opinion] prefix

Opinion (op-ed) articles must use [Opinion] prefix before the title. Opinion articles refer to articles that their publisher doesn't explictly endorse.

Country prefix

Country prefix can be added to the title with a separator (|, :, etc.) if the news is from a local publisher who doesn't clearly mention the country.
