Product placement pre-dates Spielberg by a century or more, and was a feature of cinema almost from day 1. Eg. the Lumiere Brother's films featured paid product placement for Sunlight soap.
Spielberg's movies are a bit schmaltzy for me, but he's successful for a reason.
Soap operas (even when they were still radio shows) were sponsored and featured product placements of their sponsor’s products.
They became known as ‘soap’ operas because one was sponsored by a soap company and opera because they were easy to digest and able to miss an episode so housewives could follow along while working around the house. And they targeted housewives because they were straight ads.
