Your house may be a haven for wildlife. It’s time we design homes with nature in mind
a month ago by arbilp3 to c/environment
We uncovered 36 native species that either nest, forage or sleep in our homes, ranging from microbats sleeping in curtains to pacific black ducks nesting on balconies. These encounters show buildings have become de facto habitat for many animals with whom we share our cities.
As Australia races to build more houses, we must design them with at-risk animals in mind. Their survival may depend on it.
There are ideas in the timely article some of you may be able to pick up. If you have other ways to create habitat for your local wildlife please post up your ideas.
That's what I'm doing at my place. Little by little I'm seeing wildlife I had not seen before. With springtime the sounds of courting little birds is increasing. I love it!
I am sure you know this but I am writing it here for everyone because of the gardening theme: don't forget to put out shallow bowls and bird baths for birds and also on the ground for reptiles and small mammals. The temperatures are already hot and who knows what sort of summer we're ging to have.

Planting native species can help them find appropriate food, whether by eating the plants or eating the critters that eat the plants.
