Meet Claude: ABC’s new regional cadet journalist
a month ago by Gorgritch_Umie_Killa to c/australia
I was ready to hate on this idea when I read the headline, but I don't know, a use like this seems fine.
I feel like the answer isn't one or the other. Its: You can roll out this AI tool, but that doesnt change the fact that more cadet journalists are required.
The ABC are not doing this due to a lack of humans.
The local news briefings convert original stories written by ABC journalists for regional radio bulletins into digital briefings to make them available to online audiences across the day
This seems like it takes away potential gateway grunt jobs for aspiring journalists, so in that sense I'm against it. I agree that it seems fine in terms of some other potential problems like the spread of misinformation - AI is generally very good at this type of work and I'd expect it to make few mistakes.
But doing this still squeezes people out of work, particularly young people aspiring to be journalists.
And I'd have to ask, are they using regional locations as a trial to see how it works? Because if it does and there is no pushback it makes it a lot easier to use AI in other areas of operations.
Less salaries to pay in Australia while Anthropic gets wealthier. We are selling out.
