DIY Tensahedron!

a month ago by hereiamagain to c/hammocks

I just wanted to try out the idea. I have no trees in my backyard, so this is both neat and useful.

I will try a tensegrity hammock stand next, which only uses 3 poles, but can hold 3 hammocks! I'll probably switch to metal for that 😅

Finally, maybe, I might try a geodesic dome for multiple hammocks. Though it'd have to be pretty big to be worth it over the first two versions.

Ah, okay. If it's just for an experiment to see if it holds itself up, this is fine.

Both the wood and the lines look awfully thin to actually trust with a person's weight, though!

There's surprisingly little load on those lines, the most pressure is on the lines holding the lower portions of the wood together.

The ridge line goes slack while you're in it, and the line anchoring the high end to the ground can be held with a single tent stake.

The wood is in compression, so as long as it's straight, it's fine. I did give them a wiggle while I was in it, slightly sketchy. If someone leaned hard against one while you were in it then it would buckle I'm sure.

I'll probably upgrade this one to metal poles too, if I end up using it with any regularity

Edit: I guess in this picture it's tied to the fence top rail, but, later I switched to a tent stake. Works just as well.

I have one tree in my yard, but my landlord went ape shit when we put a bird feeder in it, said we would kill the tree. He also said our flowers around the trunk were choking the tree. Anyway, I made a hammock frame from pipes.

Not my photo, but that is the style I made.

He also said our flowers around the trunk were choking the tree.

Sounds perfectly sane. 😬

Awesome!

And that's annoying about the landlord. Surprisingly, thankfully, my landlord was pretty chill when I had one
