Couple questions about gaming on Linux

a month ago by majster to c/linux_gaming

I'm a long time Linux user that hasn't gamed much in years. Previously I tried it by installing wine and going from there but I had to manually hunt for DLLs so I gave up. So I have recently installed Bazzite and stuff that I want is working :) But I'm not a huge fan of Bazzite outside of gaming. So how does one reasonably setup gaming stuff on another distro? Is flatpak the way? On Ubuntu you have many different ways to install Steam for example. What about Proton? I saw people wrangling multiple versions for different games.

If someone can point me to somewhere where tech landscape is explained it would be great.

Literally every distro has seamless gaming.

What is your target outside of the gaming aspect? Which package manager do you want to use, which desktop environment, etc. What don’t you like about Bazzite?

Literally every distro has seamless gaming.

To expand on this: Some distros want a little more setup than others for gaming, but it's generally a one-time thing and not particularly hard. Even my Debian Stable system plays games beautifully with a handful of Backports installed.

Is flatpak the way?

Steam can be installed natively or in a Flatpak. The latter can be a little fussy every once in a while, depending on your setup, but has the advantage of somewhat better sandboxing. (For better privacy protection, do your gaming on a dedicated machine or at least in a dedicated user account.)

What about Proton?

Proton is great. Steam comes with several versions, allowing you to choose the one best fitting any game that doesn't work with the latest/default version. Some users choose to add third-party Proton builds (like GE-Proton) to Steam alongside the standard ones, but it usually isn't necessary.

No no, tell me how its sandboxing is even adequate.

In addition to ruining Single Source of Truth for installed state and weak validation and resource usage, it feeds you lies about sandboxes. AND YOU BELIEVED IT!

No, you simply failed to comprehend what I wrote.

I would put a hard astrisk on that statment.

While technically true, some distos are much, much easier to get off the ground for gaming than others, and drastically reduce the level of effort that the end user has to put in.

Nobara is a great gaming distro that I'll use for example because I use it. everythings configured and ready to go out of the box and basically just install steam and install your games and go. You don't have to install anything, compile anything, configure anything.

its all there, complete with automatic updaters already installed that make updating it all easy peasy.

Can you do that on ubuntu? yes, but its gonna take a lot more work and you'll have to manually do it all.

You don't have to do anything just click play on Steam most of the time :)

If you play through Steam, since using Proton is enabled by default, you just need to install a game.

Sometimes you have to go into the game's Steam settings and manually pick a different Proton version if the game is old (usually an older version) or if the game is very new (Proton Experimental or gloriouseggroll's fork of Proton, ProtonGE, this one being a manual install from gloriouseggroll's GitHub), and you can find user reports on ProtonDB on what version other users have been using;

if you use Steam and GoG or other sources with no launcher, the main third party game launchers (Lutris, Heroic) use UMU by default, which means they leverage Steam's Proton to install and play games, basically doing what Steam does, just outside of the Steam app, therefore the experience there is the same as Steam.

This means that you can use most "normal" distros regardless of what they're marketed for. I've played games the same way on PoP! OS and EndeavourOS, simply plug and play (barring some edge cases).

Native, Flatpak or other doesn't really matter for the most part, though native is usually the most straightforward and hassle-free.

tldr: install any standard distro you like and Steam + alternate launcher and you'll find out that the gaming experience is almost completely plug-and-play

Not an expert either, but Nobara does all the pre-installation stuff and it's a pretty decent distro outside of gaming too. Might be worth a shot (it's Fedora based)

Friend installed it years ago for me, I have been running Nobara ever since. I have problems, but they are less than windows and I can actually solve them/do anything about it. I forget that I'm running Linux when playing games, I don't even check compatibility anymore

Ideally, install Steam with a native package, but if that doesn't exist, the Flatpak is always fine. You can also use Lutris if you want an all-in-one launcher for Steam, GOG, standalone, itch.io, emulators, etc. (and I know Heroic is nice if you need Epic Games)

If you use a newer device, you might want a distro with a newer kernel, but even Debian will work okay for gaming nowadays.

For most games Proton will work OOTB, but you might want to check on forums and ProtonDB for any information regarding specific tweaks for certain games. The only ones that don't work as of yet are because the companies don't want it to work. (plenty anticheat games work on Linux, Big Tech simply decides to revoke that functionality because money talks)

Linux gaming has had huge development over the last few years, it's awesome!

Heroic replaces all the functionalities of lutris without being near-vibe coded.

There's a manual install feature that allows for the same flexibility without any fuss.

Steam manages this for you on any distro it runs on, nowadays you dont even need to worry about it anymore.

Without steam you can run umu-launcher (basically valves solution with steam removed) directly, or use one of the many gui-programs that manage wine/proton prefixes for you like for example bottles.

umu-launcher and the gui solutions require wine or proton, I recommend proton-GE, a soft fork of valves upstream proton with experimental patches and gamefixes added.

for Steam I would say you always want it to be natively installed, I wouldn't use Flatpak or Snap for Steam or my web browser

but I use Flatpak for most of my other programs

Only reason, may be moot now, to use the .deb/.rpm/whatever is for VR as it is a little picky. Same as you I use flatpak for everything else where possible, lutris/bottles/emulators, just remember to also install flatseal to edit permissions (I store some stuff on an external drive, like downloads/videos and VR steam games I'm not playing but will and don't want to wait an hour or more to get, so had to add the path)

Oh! just remembered that somehow protonGE was installed (lutris or bottles? maybe fixing stuff while drunk) and steam picked it up and now plays videos in UE games, maybe a second reason? I'm wondering how that works but am not going to look a gift horse in the mouth, those teeth are scary.

Using Kubuntu 24.04, streaming VR games live. Setup is a snap (don't use snap except where Kubuntu already did and even then I switched to flatpak FireFox as snap FF started being... difficult

Most people I know have been enthusiastic about cachyos after switching to it.

Currently also running on bazzite, so I can't comment on experience. Bazzite does have it's own quircks due to the immutability. The distroboxes to run software ( both graphical as CLI ) are pretty great once you get used to them. Its nice to be able to install a .deb file in a distrobox if I have no other alternatives available.

Cachy is arch based and having access to the AUR is probably a big +.

Its hard to advise on "I don't like some bazzite things outside of gaming" though. Anything specific you miss/dislike on bazzite? Speed? Immutability?

i switched to linux early 2025 and still know very little about it. i tried several distros and finally landed on pop!_os, which worked out of the box for me running AMD cpu and RTX 5070. i tried lutris and heroic and bottles but didn't have much luck, definitely because of my lack of linux knowledge, but steam with proton GE latest works fine for 99% of games for me. there's an issue in some games where the mouse doesn't work properly for some reason, but i learned that logging out of the DE and back in fixes it

How do you have steam&proton installed? Snap/flatpak/apt?

if you go the steam site https://store.steampowered.com/about/ and hit install i think it detects your OS and chooses the correct install package. on mine it starts a download for a .deb file, i think that installs it natively? i know so little... but if you search up "install steam" plus whatever distro i'm sure you'll find a lot of info

It does install correctly for your distro, and that way is full system access .deb file, flatpak is next best from what I read but when I setup my system VR required the .deb as flatpak and snap would not grant correct permissions and I am so far removed from when I used to live on the command line that I have forgotten many many things I used to take for granted. No longer a power user, I just want it to work

Use protonplus to manage proton versions. I just use proton GE 10-34 and that works 99% of the time

Thanks for all the answers :) I probably won't be moving off Bazzite soon because its on my TV gaming PC, was just wondering what it would take. On personal laptop I have Guix which I enjoy but it usually takes special consideration when installing 3rd party stuff.

I'd pick CachyOS over Bazzite, that fixes most things.

Try Nobara with Steam, Lutris from flatpak
