A great older talk by TJ. He is a familiar figure in the Neovim community for a lot of people and is known for Telescope. He also has a Youtube channel.

TLDW: Beyond Neovim's speed, it's Vim motions and other advantages, it was the playground that allowed him to truly play around with the code that he was writing. He contrasts this with his corporate job, where a lot of variables were unknown and the release cycles were painfully slow. The main idea is that it allowed him to practice actually writing code in a way that he wasn't able to working at a company. He ends by stating that the playground doesn't have to be specifically Neovim, and urges people to: "Find your own playground to practice software development".

He's right. I can confirm.

Fair, but I want to push on this one. Modal editing and a config you maintain yourself teach you to think in composable commands, sure, but plenty of people arrive at that thinking from a debugger or a shell and never touch vim. So once the novelty wears off and it's just the tool you happen to open, what then?

That was kinda his point that it can be anything. In his case it was Neovim and grew a lot because of it.

So once the novelty wears off and it’s just the tool you happen to open, what then?

You move on to the next "playground".
