Steam Oasis Driver (WMR) adds Linux support

I haven't seen any posts about this here yet, the Oasis Driver for Windows Mixed Reality headsets added Linux support two weeks ago.
As I also got waitlisted for the Steam Frame, I have directed my enthusiasm there instead and now I have my HP Reverb G2 working again on Fedora 44. I still have to polish some small issues, but overall it works very well, even better than it did on Windows 10 before.
Huh, there's more than one person on the planet who owns a G2. I still have mine, and I'm still using it natively with the machine it's hooked up to locked to the last Windows version before it was rug-pulled. I'm definitely going to mess with this. (And I am definitely on the Frame list, too.)
Hell yeah
Circling back to report that this does indeed Just Work, although with one caveat for Windows users. I'm astonished. I tired it in Windows first which because I have an AMD GPU required holding my nose and "upgrading" to 24H2 at minimum. This is (not at all) conveniently the same feature update which rug-pulls WMR capability natively and can't be undone without a reinstall and if you're in the same kind of shoes I am and your WMR headset was working previously, that's probably because you had locked your feature version to that one with third party tools and/or group policy. So that was mildly trepidatious.
But so far so good. My only wrinkle seems to be that the double tap the menu button to activate camera passthrough does not seem to work. (Yes, I enabled the cameras in settings.)
As a frustrated Samsung Odyssey+ user this is incredible news. I've only dusted it off on occasion to try and compile everything in EnVision again, fiddle a bunch, get nauseated, and hope it improves. (I was never able to get games to launch in the headset...)
Although, being on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed...
I had no success with Wayland, therefore I do not recommend using Oasis with Wayland.
Nooooo!! 😭 Maybe it can run in x11 mode with that...X11 / Wayland bridge system...
I was jazzed for steam frame too but I'm a working class prole in 2026 A.D and it apparently doesn't even come with its own headphones? I can't responsibly justify this even if I got picked in the raffle. Lol
If this works though, I'd finally get to erase my ancient Win10 partition for good and switch all my NTFS to BTRFS. GLORIOUS!!!
Check the Oasis Driver Steam discussions, I got everything running on Fedora 44 KDE on Wayland.
Also FYI the Steam Frame does have speakers aimed at your ears, they're just not "overear headphones" like on other VR headsets.
Thanks so much for the info! I'm so happy to be incorrect on both counts hahaha.
I'm gonna look deeper into it then when I can finally get the chance. This is so very cool!! :D
Uuuusually in my experience, if something works well enough on Fedora, OpenSUSE should be fine. :D
you can tell matthieu moved to Valve! 😅
