Australian wheelchairs donated to Gaza stuck in Jordan warehouse

In short:

Hundreds of wheelchairs, donated by two Australian charities to help injured children in Gaza, are stuck in warehouses in Jordan due to Israeli restrictions.

The shipments are sitting in storage facilities managed by the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization.

What's next?

Israel says it has approved the entry of thousands of wheelchairs into Gaza "without any quantitative restrictions".

One informed source, from outside of the region, said the wheelchairs had been blocked because of concerns among Israeli authorities that the wheelchairs could be "dual use" — effectively classifying the civilian items as potential weapons.

Human rights organisations, including Gisha, have regularly criticised Israel for using a very broad definition of "dual use", arguing it goes so far as to include items like torches and tent poles.

Sure, poor IDF military, having children's wheelchairs thrown at their tanks. Perhaps those wily Palestinians might make missiles out of the wheelchairs and hurt shielded-and-armed to the teeth soldiers . Just plain anti-semitic and ouchy.

The Israeli machine is such a despicable obscenity, living and breathing for war, for testing lethal AI and weapons systems on the bodies of civilians, the Palestinian Lab. That's how you prove they work and get top-dollar from other weapons junkies. Monstrous.

Our government continues its complicity.

  2. We are not a generic World News clone. News must be relevant to Australians and our region. Obvious disregard will earn an warning and then a ban if continued. (If an article isn't from an Oceanian news outlet, and it doesn’t mention Australia, then it’s probably off-topic)
  3. News posts must include some body text explaining how the article is particularly relevant to the Australian perspective, rather than mere global news.
