privacy in e-commerce?

18 days ago by shojivr to c/privacy

most e-commerce has all my personal info including KYC and my full product ratings, and recently i realized that i already given my full address, legal name, phone number, bad ratings and some photos, etc on this e-commerce. i tried contact the customer service but they said they cannot remove any of these data and its permanent.

should i worry about this?

If you're in the EU, you might be able to try some GDPR moves. I'm not so IDK much about it, but there are other things to think about about online buying privacy.

For physical products, they'll need some addr to send to. You can use a PO box if avail in your area. Prob is most sites have an anti-fraud system. The less info it has to pin you to a real world ID, the more likely you'll trigger it.

That happened to me on ebay. Had the best possible rating, literally never got less than perfect feedback in many hundreds of transactions. Despite most of a decade of good faith use, one day they locked my acct. Demanded photo ID to unlock. Which I didn't provide, so it remains locked. I think it was b/c I used a PO box and an alias, and I block lot of browser fingerprinting. That was all fine. Until one day it wasn't.

This is why I hate scammers so gd much. Scammers use the same methods we want for honest privacy, but they use it to scam, which makes co's get super aggressive about ID'ing everbody. Scammers poison the privacy well for everybody.

Read somewhere that sometimes it's best to ask for obfuscation of personal info rather than straight up removal, as a middle ground you can both agree on, e.g. truncating your name and surname in your reviews.

If you're not in a country with strong personal information rights, try that next; if you are, you may need to contact your local data protection authority to file a complaint

Most brands likely don't deal with many GDPR style requests outside of the EU. So you'll likely want to get a note to whomever is holding the information such as ecommerce providers (Salesforce, Shopify), Reviews providers, marketing tools etc. and go through them.

You'll either yourself or through that customer support agent want to get a note to the platform powering the functionality you want to be anonymized from that you'd like your info expunged.

The tech platforms in this case will be much more used to these requests so you should have a better chance at them following through.

The good news is generally this soft deletes your data over many sites rather than just the one you shopped at so you won't have to repeat often.

Hope that helps!

KYC isn't really an e-commerce thing, it's more for financial institutions. Like for example, you have to show ID to open a bank account. Online shops will normally ship stuff to whatever address you give them and not ask for ID except for a few special types of product. Depending on their antifraud settings, you may have to call your credit card company to authorize shipping to that address, but the online vendor doesn't have to find out your home address.

Product ratings and stuff: well why did you give them that info in the first place?

Yeah for info you've already given them, there's not much you can do to get it back. You can of course be more careful going forward.

What kinds of transactions is kyc required and when is it legal to give false names to a business for privacy protection?

IANAL but KYC is a set of laws for banks and other regulated businesses. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Know_your_customer

Re ordering stuff pseudonomously, the main issue is probably payment, since credit cards are financial products and ARE subject to KYC laws. For other stuff, unless it's regulated (some kinds of medications and hazmat, etc.), the merchant probably doesn't care who you are, as long as they get paid.

I've sent cash in the mail on some occasions, mostly for small personal transactions, partly for privacy and partly for convenience.

Interesting then, a business like privacy.com lets you pay other businesses anonymously, but i assume if there is a problem and the police subpoena them, they'll turn over your real information.

I'm unfamiliar with privacy.com (I have to be suspicious of a biz with such an expensive domain name) but yeah, if you're evading the cops you're in a different world than most of us who just want to make some friction between marketroids and our personal info.

No you shouldn’t worry about it. You can’t do anything about it and can only contain what you can.
