Meet one of the largest bats in Central and South America: the black mastiff bat (Molossus rufus).

This winged-mammal has a wingspan of up to 22 in (56 cm) and weighs in around 2.5 oz (70 g).

Since this critter doesn't migrate or hibernate, it spends most of its time roosting. It may even be found in colonies of up to 500 individuals!

The black mastiff bat can travel as much as 250 mi (402 km) in a single night searching for food or water, although it typically stays within 6 mi (9.7 km) of its roost.

70 g

Well, I expected something heavier from the "one of the largest bats in Central and South America"

True, but compare it to the smallest bat in the same region, the Thumbless bat, that weighs between 3 and 5 grams. An itty bitty baby!

I'll just call it Biff.

Bats are cool

Bats are the only true flying mammals. There are over 1,400 species of bats, and they can be found on nearly every part of the planet. Not only are they cute, they are also important...

Studying how bats use echolocation has helped scientists develop navigational aids for the blind. Without bats’ pollination, seed dispersal, and pest control we wouldn’t have bananas, avocados, mangoes, agave, or cacao… that’s right, bats bring us tequila and chocolate!
