Bancomat, Bizum and Wero join forces to challenge US dominance

10 days ago by dubak to c/buyfromeu

The companies will form a new joint venture, the European Network for Payments, which will be based in Madrid and connect national payment systems.

ENP's founders are Bancomat, Bizum, EPI Company/Wero, SIBS-MB WAY and Vipps MobilePay, which together serve around 130 million users across 13 European countries, covering more than 70% of the population of the EU and Norway. The network will connect existing payment systems through a common technical and operational layer based on European standards and instant account-to-account payments.

The announcement has a bitter-sweet flavor for those who have been following EPI and Wero. Spanish and Italian banks were originally part of EPI, but they left in 2021 and founded European Payments Alliance. The reason was that they wanted to retain their national open banking solutions: Bizum and Bancomat. EPI refused this type of fragmentation and wanted all members to adopt a common solution. As a consequence, any further progress stalled until June 2025, when EPI gave in and accepted the existence of parallel payment solutions.

The recent announcement shows that Bizum and Bancomat will migrate from national open banking solutions to ECB's open banking API which is also used by Wero. Hence, the migration costs and technological interoperability weren't the reasons why Spanish and Italian banks refused to join Wero. Rather, they see Bizum and Bancomat brand respectively as a strategic chip that could help them gain market share. Thus, in addition to the announced cooperation, we may also see some competition. Notably, the German branches of Santander, BBVA and HSBC (Unicredit) are among the few German banks that haven't announced Wero yet. Most likely they plan to bring Bizum and Bancomat to Germany rather than to offer Wero.

IMO, this also marks the end of announcements of new banks joining Wero. Portuguese, spanish and italian banks will keep their national solutions and join ENP. Scandinavian banks will keep Mobile Pay and join ENP. Polish banks will likely keep BLIK and could reasonably join ENP. The remaining central european countries lack dominant national open banking solutions, which could be migrated and rebranded to Wero or which could join ENP. The most promising path for them to join is if the Erste Group or KBC Group introduce Wero, or if BLIK expands beyond Poland (and joins ENP). AFAIK the prospects of Wero in baltic countries aren't any better.

The cooperation between EuroPA and EPI was announced over a year go. It was clear back then that new countries will not join Wero but some integration will be done instead. European Network for Payments looks just like formalization of this cooperation.

For many people the limits of Wero were clear from the very beginning. Countries don't want to implement solutions controlled by German and French banks. They made it clear in 2021 when they left EPI.

What is the down side, if every country keeps its established system? As long as they offer interoperability it should not matter much. And this is the goal of the ENP, if I understand the article correctly. Who cares if one country's frontend shows wero and in another it is called Bancomat.

Leaving Wero while retaining the payment technology would imply high rebranding costs. On the other hand, leaving ENP and blocking some interoperability partners bears almost no cost at all. So Spanish and Italian banks may easily leave ENP and give up interoperability in future once it doesn't suit their strategic goals.

While great that there's an alternative, they are just hurrying to get something on the market because the Digital Euro will be like digital coins and bills: free to use (no cost to user and seller), supported by all banks, usable without a phone i.e no dependency on Goolag nor CrApple.

They are hoping to get people roped into their alternative before the Digital Euro can arrive. Which they have a fair chance at because it will take (in digital time) ages until it's here

The ECB stated that, assuming EU legislation is adopted in 2026, the Eurosystem aims to be ready for a potential first issuance of a digital euro by 2029, with testing beginning from mid-2027

Do Santander and the other two have relevant market share in Germany?

I don't have the numbers, but it's probably more relevant that italian UniCredit is acquiring Commerzbank (+Comdirect) which is second biggest German bank. HSBC's (also UniCredit) revenue is one third of Commerzbank's and a merger is planned. Commerzbank already announced wero so it will be interesting what UniCredit makes out of that situation.

Challenge US dominante? How? By providing the required mobile app only via those app stores that enforce you to adhere to the terms of use imosed by US owned ecosystems?

Is there a way to challenge this legally? I think they need to be forced to open source
