Social media is an awful invention

6 days ago by Cyril Strobe to c/unpopularopinion

And yes, I’m aware of the irony of posting this on social media, but I truly think that it is an awful thing that has happened humanity.

And to be absolutely clear, I do acknowledge that there are benefits: it allows people who are distant to remain in touch, for example. Or it can be used to put out critical information (think COVID-19 for example).

But let’s face it — there’s another face to it also, one that brings out the worst of humanity. How far do you have to scroll on any platform before you find toxicity? Divisive, inflammatory comments that bring out the absolute worst in us. All because people have different opinions on any topic (the problem of course is not in people having different opinions, but in giving the masses the means to express their differing opinions is really what leads to too many civilised conversations descending into barbaric insults and word slinging. Try as hard as you like to disengage, friction will always produce heat.)

Moreover, how much misinformation has been spread on social media platforms over the years? I don’t think I need to say much more about that.

And to be clear: I’m not saying these issues and others are exclusive to social media — they certainly existed long before, perhaps even as early as when man first learned to communicate with one another — but the creation of social media is possibly the biggest chunk of fuel on the fire of discord, and regardless of where you go — whether it be Facebook, or Reddit, or Snapchat, or twitter, or YouTube, or Lemmy, or text messaging, or internet forums, or whatever other platforms exist out there, you will not find a platform that is not plagued — nay, riddled — with such awfulness. And no, I’m absolutely not saying that I myself have not played my fair part in toxicity because I have, but I’m willing to admit it. Are you?

Social media was great in its early days I think! When it was mainly about helping people connect with others they didn’t know... It was an exciting idea! But it started to take a turn for the worse when the owners of these platforms wanted to expand and reach more people. They began doing anything, even harmful things, to get users to spend more time on the platforms and become dependent on them.

Algorithms now recommend more content that plays on people’s emotions, especially fear and anger! Platform owners made it possible for anyone to become a digital creator and earn money, which led creators to publish anything, even misleading information. Short and fast-paced content spread everywhere, and the original purpose of social media was lost.

There are days when I wonder, given the nature of the concept has changed so much, is it even really ‘social media’ anymore? And if not, at what point did it stop being social media (as it were then, at least)?

No. Meta has been very explicit about the fact that it's a "data-driven ad company". The platform exists to cultivate "engagement" (your attention) as a product they can sell to advertisers.

Not to mention the copious amounts of personal data they harvest, including the id of the device you use. Seriously, use the Brave Browser if you need to, because they log everything about your phone now. That’s not social media

Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)
  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/
