You own the Apple cable and are responsible for the repairs, Apple sells replacements, so they're built to die and require replacement quickly.

Back in the day, the phone company owned the phone and was responsible for the repairs, so they were built to last.

I think the implication is that a healthy relationship wouldn't be phased by such a stunt.

No. Tying my housing security to my employment security only benefits the employer. A worker is allowed to leave whenever they want; a slave isn't.

Is that tongue-and-groove shiplap boards for the treads? If so, those are interior boards; they're likely made of MDF and won't last long outdoors in the weather.

Why not just run the screws in from the top of the tread down into the stringer? The angle is what's causing the splitting; the screw is putting pressure perpendicular to the grain, pulling it apart.

Going into the side of the stringer like that, it's a good idea to drill out your screw holes but is looks like that wasn't done.

There's a big ass shim under the leftmost stringer. The rightmost stringer doesn't even look like it's touching the ground. Second from the left is only partially touching the ground and needs a shim. None of the stringers are attached to the ground. I would use joist hangers and tap cons going into the concrete.

The split stringers need to come out and be remade, which means the whole staircase needs to come apart. All of the stringers should touch the ground and be anchored to the ground.

Everything needs to be made of pressure treated, preferably ground contact rated, lumber. At minimum, the stringers should be rated for ground contact and the treads should be pressure treated.

Also, file your permits. If you get caught building unpermitted stairs, you'll be fined and have to tear them down. If they break and injure someone, your homeowners insurance won't cover it because you negligently built an unpermitted structure, which means you're personally on the hook for any judgements levied to grant their relief.

First of all, get your hands on it and get it home. You'll have time to figure out the rest once you do that.

Get it home, test the moisture as soon as you get it there. Continue to test it every day until it's about the same 3-5 days in a row.

It might be dried, but it still needs to acclimate to where you'll be working with it.

If it's timber, you'll need to shave the bark off it, at a minimum. This is best done with a hatchet, but anything you can use to get it off without damaging too much of the wood underneath is fine.

If you want tool handles, go ahead and chuck it on the lathe and go to town. If you don't have a lathe, it's going to be very difficult, but not impossible, to get it round.

If you want S4S (squared on all four sides) boards, you'll need a table saw (or maybe a band saw would do), planer, and jointer to get them within 1/16" of your final desired dimensions, then sneak up on final measurements with your planers.

Technically, chess ends one turn before the king is taken. "Checkmate" basically means, "I can capture your king next turn of I want to and there's no way you can avoid it."

You're not allowed to put your own king in check because, if this were allowed, stalemate wouldn't be possible; the game would always end with the loser moving their king into check and the winner taking it. The rule allows the player of a losing game to still play for a draw, as opposed to simply resigning.

Fundamentally, batteries work by converting potential, chemical energy into electrical energy, and vice versa. Inside the battery is an anode and diode. Together, they create a chemical reaction that moves electrons from to the other. As electrons flow from one to the other, electricity is created. Running a current into the battery (charging it) reverses this reaction and moves the electrons back. This reversal process isn't perfectly efficient; every time it happens, some electrons are left behind and stay there until the battery is rebuilt. Once enough electrons are stuck this way, the battery's capacity is diminished. How quickly this happens and the circumstances that accelerate it depend on the materials used to build the battery. When it comes to battery materials, there are many options for the anode/diode combination and each have their strengths and weaknesses.

Car batteries use lead and acid, which is cheap and powerful, but also bulky, heavy, and prefers to be charged near to full capacity or it runs the risk of the cells not being able to reverse their reaction. Basically, once they "die" they sometimes don't charge back up.

Phones, laptops, and other modern electronics use lithium-ion batteries, which are lighter and more compact, but also weaker and behave differently. Lithium-ion batteries prefer to be nearly dead and operating at low capacity.

Basically, lead-acid batteries create a chemical reaction that prefers to move as many electrons as possible for maximum power, while lithium-ion batteries create a chemical reaction that prefers to move as few as possible for maximum longevity. Like anything else, you get the most out of them by playing to their strengths and avoiding their weaknesses.

Now, as to the nitty gritty why do lithium-ion batteries prefer to be charged that way, and what causes those electrons to become stuck more frequently when charged to max capacity? I dunno. That's a good question for a chemist or a physicist; I'm just a person who reads a lot.

It's probably a good thing you didn't get the Easy Bake or any of its knockoffs/clones. The thing was banned shortly after release because kids kept burning themselves and their houses down.

My eight-year-old cousin had one. The first time she used it, she ended up with burns on her hands and had to go to the hospital. I don't know the circumstances of what happened, but knowing her mom, she probably wasn't being supervised when it happened, and, knowing my cousin (and eight-year-olds), she probably didn't read the instructions. So, the danger probably lies more in the concept than the execution.
