how did Cumberland get into that situation? why did they agree to play a football game with a huge penalty for forfeit without having a football team?
They canceled their football program in 1915 not thinking they would be held liable for not playing a game
Edit: 1915 not 2015
1915

The headline does not tell about how mean spirited John Heisman was in insisting with this game be played.
Cumberland College faced a financial penalty, so big that the very existence of the school itself was in jeopardy if they forfeited, so they rounded up any students they could find to play.
Georgia Tech, the Ohio State of its day, played a game against a team whose players who did not know how to play football.
Cumberland players got annihilated - physically.
Remember this when you’re talking about the Heisman trophy. It honors a real asshole
